'Rosan cabal, size of a chaffinch'

Could someone explain this to me?!
I'm not sure if it's because I'm not from the UK, but I don't quite get the "Rosan cabal" part....
The "size of a chaffinch" I do get though....

I suspect nobody knows... me neither. My guess is

a) it's some kind of a spell ("I'll turn myself into a miniature Rosan Cabal". Whatever that is. Perhaps it's an apple sort? Or a person, an evil witch/bitch who would scare off the owners of the tree?)

b)it's a famous quote from some gardening program that only shows in UK and he tries to make the owners laugh..?

c) maybe it's just a weird thing to say (like "three claws on his knee, he's not human") to throw off the owners while he skedaddles..?

Mu ha ha ha - I know!!

And it's not just a UK TV thing - it's from that fave kids program of yester-year "The Banana Splits".

In the prog they had a cartoon called "Arabian Knights". In that was a character called Bez AKA ‘Bez the Beast’ as he could turn his body into the form of any animal. After saying "Rosan Cabal" he starts his transformation by saying "Size of a..." and then saying the name of the animal he wanted to turn into. In this case - a chaffinch.

I laughed long and hard at that one - I always wanted to have Bez's abilities as a kid. So I guess did (or does!) Bill Bailey.

Thanks tbax23!!

I googled it up and I'm sorry I missed the show. I think I might have liked it. It sounded like a funny and slightly obscure show, right up my street.

Glad to have been of service chaps - anything for a fellow fan of Bill Bailey! Hope you got to see his "twin" cameo in the awesome Hot Fuzz.

The Banana Splits were fabulous as a kid, both the live stuff with the Splits and the animations. All very crazy and inventive - pity you can't get their shows on dvd.

ah .. you see .. you're not a brit, so you suspect it might actually mean something - some peculiar/obscure cultural reference or something.

but, we brits know it's just a nonesense phrase that sounds like a silly magic incantation.

Eh, try reading VivaMongo's (aka tbax23) replies why don't you....
