characters under age

Does anyone else find it odd that the ten year old characters are so sexually and romantically interested in eachother? I mean I've heard that average kids today make pretentions in that direction, but it seems sort of strange in relation to the traditionalistic theme of summer camp adventures. I mean, do very many kids really go to summer camps for weeks at a time like that anymore? especially outside the context of church camps and such. Maybe I'm just out of it, but that seemed a little odd. It was as if they wanted the characters to be about 15, but some anime influence and the fact that the 15 year old at camp has been so overdone influenced them into a hasty switch.

On an unrelated note the poster on the other threads mentioning Bonita Soleil having significant likeness to a transvestite I see your point. That is a distinctly masculine voice. In fact it reminds me of the older brother from Everybody Loves Raymond

I thought the game only took place for a couple days, like maybe three at the very least, five at the most. And in middle school, there was trips that were three-five days long.

And on Soleil(?), the first thing that came to mind was Dr. Girlfriend from the show Venture Bros. Because it's a 'hot chick', but a guy does the voice for her, and he does it insanely deep. Wonderful character.

My head's not big! Why does everyone say that?

The kids aren't sexually interested in each other any more than kids being curious about their own bodies and other people's. When we grow up we like to forget it but as boys we did try to sneak peeks into the girls' locker room long before we hit puberty, and there was no shortage of pressure on the subject of 'making out'. It's not because we were horny fiends - it's just because we were curious.

As for the camp lasting weeks, I'd attribute that to the fact that it's a psychic training camp, not a regular summer camp. If it was just a week, the kids wouldn't get much of a chance to train.

Personally, I think Tim Schafer did a fantastic job capturing the spirit of summer camp.

reply

I really don't think that Schafer was going for anything but the spirit of summer camp. You're trying to find an innapropriate statement from a game that goes out of its way to not be taken seriously.

reply

I thought they seemed more like 13-14. It was all done pretty innocently, though.

reply

I did too but in the velvet painting land, Raz says, "This place reminds me of High School... which is weird because I'm only ten." And I was all like, "Dude, I thought he was like thirteen!" I said it exactly like that.

reply

When I was ten, I spent a month at summer camp. Some of the other kids spent two months.

I thought they were just a little mature for ten-year-olds. (Milka's a little jealous...)

And not just the romantic stuff, either. Crystal and Clem had some serious issues.

reply

I don't know about you, but I was interested in girls when I was 10. It's not that far fetched. Of course, the kids in this game obviously talk and act a lot like adults, which is where a lot of the humor comes from. I think it's great.

reply

I don't think that it's that much more sexually loaded than... lets say Charlie Brown.

I think [the title of the latest Hollywood blockbuster] is the greatest movie ever made!

I work with some kids around age ten, and while some of them talk dirty and get all in a fuss over boyfriends/girlfriends and about getting married/seeing naked girls, in actuality they're all excited about holding hands.

I agree with the above poster they should be thirteen-ish (wouldn't have to change anything except that one line in Velvetopia!)

I mean, ten-year-olds as shy as milka and elton kissing on the lips the evening after they decide they like eachother? really?

reply

At what age did you go to high school? I know I started when I was 14, and graduated when I was 18. I was in the 7th grade when I turned 13. That's pretty typical. So the line in Velvetopia doesn't mean he couldn't be 12 or 13.
