Is it a theatrical film or simply a play recorded and used as a movie?

Stupid question yes but hey I'm stupid.

It was a movie first then a musical and then a movie musical

I may be wrong but I think the OP was asking if this version is an actual live-action movie or a recording of the Broadway production, similar to watching a stage performance that you might see on PBS. This is a real movie with exterior shots filmed in NYC.

I saw the original show in July 2002 and it was just fabulous! The timing was great because it was just a couple of weeks after the Tony Awards, so when Max says to Roger, "Think of ... the Tony," the audience went wild!
