fast forward through most of the musical numbers.

Maybe they were good live, but they are incredibly flat on screen.
Otherwise, the portion of the movie that reflects the original story is great.

I agree. The music is just typical Broadway show tosh. It's boring, sentimental and not very interesting or expressive. The long song and dance between Ulla and Bloom was just excruciating and I fast-forwarded when I couldn't take any more. Springtime for Hitler was brilliant, and I enjoyed the dancing pearl girls and old ladies, but the rest was dull and overlong.
