Sangmin's dad and the car...

Is there some cultural significance to beating up a car with a baseball bat that can be parsed into "I guess the wedding's on"? Or is it just some in-joke reference to something else?

My guess is that the dad went beserk as to pressure the son to get married.

In most Asian cultures, a children obey or respect their parents decision no matter how difficult it is for them (Although this value is changing now-a-days). since Sangmin's grandfather is forcing the marriage on them and Sangmin's dad cannot do anything but to accept his father's decision, he is angry and letting his anger out by wrecking the car.

Like someone breaks something when they are angry. by judging her husband's behavior, Sangmin's mother knows instantly that he is helplessly agreeing to his father's decision and hence passes on the quoted phrase.

From the movie what I think is Sangmin's parent's are not unhappy about the marriage but they wanted more time. I guess they wanted Sangmin and Bo-eun to decide whether they like each other and if they want to get married.

@kappa88 You're a bit incorrect. Sang min's dad was in on the plot with the grandfather.

The joke with the car was that he kept trying to get their attention but they were so into the tv show they were watching that he had to resort to the craziness of hitting the car for them to take him serious. He's supposed to be in such despair that the young couple could please grandpa before he dies by marrying. If you notice though, there was a silver newer spotless car next to it that he patted on his way by. He didn't put a scratch on it. The blue car was probably the family clunker that wouldn't be as big a deal to wreck.
