They did resolve it. They showed that he switched back to human when he had been sleeping or alternatively through meditation. And he turned into the dog when something triggered his animal nature and he gave into it.

If he remained calm/meditated he could stay human. And even if he turned into a dog and couldn't manage to meditate, after a good sleep he'd switch back. No big deal. It's like being a werewolf.
