Proof of dumbing down America

You can't even make a remake with the original title (The Shaggy D.A.)because know one knows what a D.A. is. What's next: Rabbit Bunny (producer: Hey, he's not an insect. Why do we have to call him Bugs)

I read that article too. Well done. Thank you for another demonstration of how Americans (hell, anyone in a 'western' culture) lap up the media given to them.

I think that America is dumb not because of Hollywood, but because of so many people talking about something they do not like !!!! Pleeeasee !!

no, Americans have become complacent and have forgotten the spirit that made this country great...everyone is now too involved in making sure that fanatical religious ideals are forced upon everyone in this country regardless of each individual person's right to choose his own destiny (as stated int he Constitution and reinforced in the Bill of Rights). People in this country have become lazy, apathetic to following politics and actually forcing change to a better society. Don't blame this on Hollywood, they are only giving stupid people what they want because for them it is the almighty dollar they care about. Instead, people should actually make choices for themselves and stop being sheep following the lead of those in power with bad ideas. If you don't like something, don't just bitch about it...do something to change it.

ONly the movies are dumb, not America. I can only take even the most lauded of film so seriously.

high five...:o)

reply

um...you know the original 1959 movie was called the Shaggy Dog, right?

reply

I would venture to say there are people in this country who think the main actor is a rapper named "Shaggy Dog"

reply

There was both the shaggy dog (1959) & the Shaggy D.A. (1976)

Really the dumb thing is that hollywood is so out of ideas that they have to remake all these old movies. Its not even so much that they remake them, its that they remake them and have nothing to add except a modern sense of humor or horror. Few do that well.

Then again, they could always remake "that darn cat" and put Hally berry in the lead. That might be worth heckling ;-)

reply

They did remake That Darn Cat in the 90's, starring Christina Ricci and Doug E. Doug. And yes, it was that bad.

also it's possible that the Shaggy Dog was made for the sole purpose of being a tax write-off. Tim Allen's reputation is garbage by now anyway, why now take some fiber and push out a low-brow low risk film for an easy $15 mil? Can anyone confirm if the license for the Shaggy D.A. was expiring and they had to use it or lose it? (like that German fantastic four flick).

Theres no way anyone connected to this film was trying to make a critical masterpiece. Any realist on the payroll knew he/she was not going to get an Emmy, so maybe it all comes down to money.

just a thought. I still have nightmares about that movie poster. (I could have made a better one at home in a day, what Graphic Designer got paid for THAT?)

THE EYYYYYEEZ!!! NOOOOO!!!

If you really think that movies have gotten dumber go back and watch all of the freakin' Beach Party and Beach Blanket Bingo movies. We like to say things keep getting worse but only because we forget the bad movies of the past.

Now don't get me wrong, this movie will be total garbage and it shouldn't ever exist. Ever. Period. Maybe Tim Allen just has some more cocaine bills to pay. But if you think bad movies are a new thing do a little more research.

You make a good point. I grew up as a teen in the 80's (born in 70) and remember all those bad 60's beach movies and 70's action films they played on Sunday afternoons. Every time I go to the video store, I lament (often verbally) the number of bad movies that come out every year. Not just this year, but as far back as I can remember. Granted, I found the mid- to late 90's to be a virtual wasteland, with entire seasons filled with dreck; but, for the most part, every year is filled with 95% garbage, 4% watchable and 1% Quality films.

I agree some great movies came out during the 80's. Just like in the 70's, 60's, 50's, etc. The nineties and modern cinema is no diferent. Some great movies have come out recently and since the turn of the millenium. It's the perception of the audience that changes. This is a different world than it was 20 years ago; the same could be said in 1985.

I stand by what I said: 95% of the movies coming out are crap. The rest are like diamonds in the rough.

"Then I wish I had your low-level of standards as to which I could accept any of those movies as being great."

Then that makes two of us with "low-level of standards" because those movies he listed were definitely classics. Maybe you just have outrageously high standards? Or perhaps you're so stuck in previous decades that nothing today seems good to you? (I have a few liberal college professors who swear it's still 1969...)

I don't know. I'm 21 and all of the "old classics" from the 60's & 70's seem horrible to me.

"In 2005 we got Crash, Batman Begins, Serenity, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Sin City, Devil's Rejects, Red Eye, and Walk the Line. All of those were great. You just have to seek out the good ones."

You REALLY need to see more movies.

Don't confuse Hollywood with America. Hollywood is a smug isolated community that his no conception of how their countrymen think or what they like.
If you paid attention, you might have noticed that there's been a steep decline in movie-going in the US.

Excelllent point kensu-3! I totally agree with your summation of the topic! Why does Hollywood think/believe the "naive" American public will see & or purchase that crap that they are handing down lately? Dumbing of American movie goers, here. Because we will see any movie on a weekend just to appease the kids , or to get a date etc. Why not boycott such drivel and we may see an actual uprising in the movie production business., Also, the quality of the film. NO More unnecessary re-makes! I was an avid movie goer WAY before all of the "Bewitched" and Yours mine and ours ,also When a Stranger calls 2005--acck- It galls me to think there are Hollywood fat asses that think we want to see this crap!! The Love Bug, The shaggy dog, bad news bears--Bite me!

I am done with the rant for now but I hope I got my point across --Tim Allen as a shaggy dog! jeeze who the hell got that green lighted??

RENT IT --Stay out of the theatre at all costs!! Go to a friends house and watch the classics .

Fan of Indie's-- FOREVER!!

true true!

i will refuse to see this pile of cripe. why is hollywood trying to do this? yeah, and seriously who green-lights this stuff?

Hey there Chief - the original title was "The Shaggy Dog." The SEQUEL was "The Shaggy D.A." That said, I think this movie will blow big time.

People who judge the United States by the movies put out by Hollywood, show just how ignorant and stupid they really are. I don't judge India for all those stupid Bollywood movies or Japan for the violent, shock films such as Oldboy and Ichi: The Killer. I know, by taking a closer look at the culture, that there are much more to these nations than the movies, television, ect. they produce. People should do the same for the united states...but they don't. I'm not saying the US is the greatest...but "The Shaggy Dog" is not "proof" of the dumbing down of America. Why am I on a "The Shaggy Dog" message board?

reply

Don't you mean NO one knows, not KNOW one knows. Wow, where are you from?

reply

Yeah, that's already been covered. It's not that long of a thread, read it.

Anyways, yeah the point has been made not to judge countries on their movies, and that remakes can be totally pointless, but what no one has brought up is how most people that complain about a country making bad movies don't even try to help that. Why don't you help out Hollywood by sending in a good script. And even if you're not that creative, choose an old movie from the 1920s and reamke it! But DON'T remake one from the 70s, or 60's unless it's a bad movie and you KNOW you can improve it.

I write (so far just for my own amusement) both original stories & a few re-make ideas. But I've always been leery of sending a script for fear it would be stolen & be left w/out credit or money for my efforts. And agents cost money which I cannot spare at the moment. Any ideas to protect my work? -Btw, I think part of the reason projects like Shaggy Dog are green-lighted could be special effects. They're so proud they can computer morph now instead of using various make-up shots.

One idea - stop worrying about it. Having a film company or producer steal your script would place you in the very unfortunate category of the 0.000000000000001% of script writers this has happened to. It's a shame that so many people are terrified of getting their work out of here through some myth that invariably never happens. Big companies get thousands of scripts in the post each week - it's not like they have to resort to stealing to get material. And imagine if they got busted for plagiarism (and it's actually not too tough to prove you wrote it originally)? It just isn't worth their risk.

If you are still worried about it, go ahead and get an agent. What about money, you say? Well, no reputable agent would charge you a penny until they sold your work for big bucks, so that's not an issue.

Go on, send your damn scripts already! You might be THE ONE who can save us from steaming crap like Shaggy Dog!
