Shriekfest Shocks Hollywood

October 3, 2006 -- Not to be confused with Screamfest LA -- but ultimately related as it takes place in the same neck of the woods in the same time of year -- Shriekfest is one of the largest horror film festivals in the country. Here's an exclusive update from Steve Biodrowski on highlights of the 2006 Shriekfest Festival, which took place in Hollywood, Calif.:

The big winner for Best Feature Film at this year’s Shriekfest Film Festival in Hollywood was THE OTHER SIDE, an independent feature film that wowed audiences at a screening on Saturday night and elicited rounds of applause on Sunday when the award was announced – pretty impressive when you consider that many if not most of the audience were fellow filmmakers entered in the competition.

Competitiveness aside, THE OTHER SIDE was the obvious choice, even in a field that included several other impressive titles. Gregg Bishop’s action-packed opus – about souls that escape from hell and are tracked down by almost unkillable “Reapers” intent on bringing them back – may be the EL MARIACHI of horror films: a low-budget calling card that opens doors to Hollywood, allowing for a big-budget sequel-remake down the road. (One of the running gags during the Q&A after the film was which stars would replace the excellent cast of the original, with names like Ewan MacGregor and Michael Clarke Duncan thrown around.) There is no distribution deal for the film yet, but Hollywood would have to be crazy to let this one go direct-to-video. It’s like a horror movie version of THE TERMINATOR, THE HIDDEN, and SUPERMAN II all rolled into one: it delivers the goods – action and special effects – but also tells a complex story without ever dragging the pace to a standstill.

Another review, this one from Hollywood Gothique:

The stunning action, stunts, make-up and special effects belie the low-budget of writer-director Gregg Bishop's independent film (which was shot in Georgia). But even more impressive is the way the flashy camera work serves the story, which juggles several plot elements without dropping the ball. The film features great performances all around, and even without star power, this is at least one entry at Shriekfest that deserves to go on to a theatrical release. Are you listening, Hollywood?

reply

Agreed! This movie really needs a theatrical release!

All of my friends back home who haven't seen it yet are dying to check it out.

Well, I wouldn't call it a 'horror film', but it definitely reminded me of 'El Mariachi'!

reply

The only thing that reminded me of "el mariachi" was the low budget and a lot of action. Otherwise, 2 very different movies with hardly nothing similar

reply

Dude, everyone knows that "The Evil Dead" is the "EL Mariachi" of horror films. This one doesn't even compare to the awesomeness of those two.

reply

These movies are just different. While I'm a big fan of Evil Dead and El Mariachi, I felt The Other Side had it's own charm.

reply

You can't really say that Evil Dead is the "el mariachi" of horror films if "evil dead" preceeded that film. I thought you can only say it's the so and so if the movie you're talking about came after it. Does that make any sense?

Like you could say "El Mariachi" is the "Evil Dead" of westerns or something like that. Well I didn't really like El Mariachi that much when it comes down to it, anyway.

reply

Writer-director Gregg Bishop is himself the one making the comparison to EL MARIACHI; I just picked it up and ran with it my coverage of THE OTHER SIDE.

The comparison is not in terms of content and/or story. The comparison is that EL MARIACHI was shot as a low-budget independent movie that got Hollywood's attention and led to the high-profile follow-ups DESPERADO and ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO.

THE OTHER SIDE was created in the hope of charting a similar path: prove yourself with a low-budget effort that really delivers the goods and then try to use that to leverage a bigger-budget follow-up.

The only path this movie charted was to the bottom of the bargain bin. Positive reviews of this movie are way scarier than anything in the movie itself.
