500 push ups

isn't that too much for a teenager

reply

Yeah those were pretty unrealistic. And the ridiculous amount of suicides. Your usually dead tired after 10 of them.

reply

Not 500 in a row, of course. He gave him a couple days to finish the job.

i've done 10 in a row.

I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, "... I drank what?"

reply

When I played basketball in high school years, when practice was "over", we had to earn the privilege of being able to leave. We each did five free throws, and for each one missed, we had to do five suicides, then get back in line to do another five free throws, and keep in that cycle until we made all five, then we could leave. Improved both our accuracy and endurance (and since we were worn down by the suicides, it was good we only had to drag ourselves out the door at that point).

reply

Atheles can do push ups very easily. 500 can be done in under an hour for those who play sports or are athletically fit.

reply

I could do 500 in an hour easily in sets of 50. Probably half an hour. Might try it tomorrow!!!

Yeah Well that puts them into shape, they're future athletes!

Notice that coach Carter never counts the amount they do. He`s giving them a high amount and leaves them to do as many as they can, knowing that they will try and and reach the target but it`s not important to him wether they do 50 or 500 or 1000. Mind over matter.

reply

You're right...Coach Carter never counts them, but his assistant did. Remember the whole scene with Cruz coming up short. His assistant showed him the clipboard to show him how many he did and was asked to stay after to count the team's push ups.

That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it.

reply

500 pushups are to much especially since it might hurt your shoulder .

reply

The sprints and pushups in sets are not that much. At first, they will be. But once you become conditioned, you can do more and more.

A normal person can easily do 500 pushups in a day, all you have to do it break it down into manageable sets, and do it.

reply

i coached hoops for about 10 years.

We had a limited amount of time available for practice: if our practice was supposed to run to 7 p.m., we were supposed to be off the court by 7:00.01, so I never ever wasted time on doing non-basketball stuff like pushups and suicides.

I always made sure our regular practices included enough stuff like full-court fastbreak drills, full-court passing and pressing, etc etc so everybody got plenty of running practice but they were doing basketball drills at the same time.

Plus I never wanted them to think of running as a punishment, I said, "we are going to run plenty every day in practice just as part of our normal routine."

4) You ever seen Superman $#$# his pants? Case closed.

reply

Maybe he didn't have to do them all at once. Say he does 50, then takes a break, does another 50, and so on.

reply

Yes, do them in sets over the course of a day, its very doable for anyone - just takes doing it.

reply

I do Pushups as my main exercise. I use to shoot for 250 a day, then 500 day, eventually it got to 1,000 a day and now its 1,000 or more inside one consecutive hour.

reply

Nice! That is very impressive. Like I was saying, if you want to do them, you set your mind to it and set a goal!

It is very realistic for a coach of a sports team to want his athletes to train like this.
