Older films then this

I know nothing, but when looking over this and running into other info, it seems indeed it's called in the most serious write-ups the oldest KNOWN, surviving film. I got the impression that experts know there were older films, but have no hard copies. But don't quote me on any of that.

I think the key word is "surviving". Implying that there is knowledge of motion clips made before this one, but that they are lost to the world. It would be kewl to find one even older that can still be played. Is there a credible data source that talks about films even older that have not survived? Just curious.

According to Christopher Rawlence, author of the The Missing Reel, Le Prince made the Accordion Player film of his son playing an accordion the same day and prior to Roundhay Garden Scene. Frames to the film still exist, but apparently haven't been restored like Roundhay and Leeds Bridge. There used to be a website, however, which played the stills in sequence, but it seems to be gone now. One can still see the stills at Wikipedia on the page for Le Prince and other places.

I'm pretty sure Running Man is a couple years older. I could be wrong.

This is the oldest surviving film,I highly doubt there's anything prior to 1888.

This could be the oldest surviving film or it could be not, it is not possible to know due to the history of it's creator, he did a lot of experiments with his invention and recorded several scenes like the three surviving, some where shown others weren't. In 1890 when he was going to travel to the USA to promote his camera he misteriously dissapeared on a train in France, he was never found and neither was the suitcase carrying all his films so all his material was lost.
The films that survive were rescued from cameras that were not with him when he dissapeared but we don't know what he was carrying with him so it is possible that in the dissapeared suitcase there were other older films, it is possible that there weren't we can't know it, that is the reason why we say oldest surviving film.
