Interesting example, since we actually get to see the individual, Harvey Pekar. This explains why this is a slippery concept. I see Harvey as a creative, quirky but not without emotional connections.

Remember the retirement party given by his fellow workers. They liked the guy! They were all limited, as are 99% of the poor slobs who occupy space on this planet. And he even found a life partner, and they had a relationship, with sex, laughter and arguments.

That's better than most of us get out of life.

From what I hear from many who are diagnosed with this....disease, it is part of diagnostic expansion that should be seriously evaluated. Diversity of personality is the stuff of evolution that is part of not only our species, but every one of them.

The definition for any personality disorder should be limited, the value weighed against the stigma. This does not mean that if someone is having difficulty functioning, that treatment should not be available, but this is a difficult issue. Normal for humanity, includes some pretty unusual, abnormal individuals, as so it should be.

I couldn't agree more!

That's not Aspergers, she had mental health issues. Unless, was the guy supposed to have it? They just said that Depp's character was "eccentric".

Tim Burton's "Edward Scissorhands" is arguably the best one, actually. Obviously it isn't directly intended, but there's been a lot of talk about it being a sort of metaphor for AS, and Burton (who, many years later was revealed to be probably on the spectrum) based a lot of the movie on himself and his own childhood.

Having seen "Mozart" for the first time last night, I think it's basically good in terms of portrayals (certainly better than "Rain Man") but could have been written slightly better. Definitely not bad though.

reply

Rainman is not about Asperger's.

Spaceballs: Funny, she doesn't look Druish.

reply

Rainman with Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman

reply

Rainman is not Asperger's

reply

Rain Man is absolutely an Asperger's-type movie. He is diagnosed, in the film, as "high function autism," which is Asperger's.

Some people argue about where the line is, but the fact is, Rain Man is definitely on the spectrum.

reply

Asperger's is NOT just general high function autism. Is is a specific type of autism. Hence, all Asperger's people have autism, but not all people who have autism even high functioners have Asperger's. Dustin Hoffman in "Rain Man" has autism but NOT Asperger's.

Point taken.

From personal experience I can guarantee Rainman is not about Asperger's.

reply

There is debate about the thing you are stating as fact, so sorry, but you are wrong. HFA and AS may or may not be the same thing, depending on which doctors you speak to.

Personally, I think the whole autism thing is a sham, as it is based on measuring how well you integrate with normal society, not measuring anything specific in terms of how the brain is actually constructed.

reply

HFA and AS are essentially the same thing except AS is a specific diagnosis whereas HFA simply means the individual is higher functioning than other autitistics.

How is autism a sham? You either have it or you don't. Some have it so bad they can't even operate a microwave.

reply

Rainman, Dustin Hoffman's character, DOES NOT HAVE ASPERGERS. Not even close. I wouldn't even call him High Functioning. He has too many neuroses. He most definitely is a savant. In math, I mean.

Dustin's portrayal was right on the money.

reply

I admitted I was wrong and Raymond is not Aspie, however, an Aspie can easily have many crippling neuroses, depending upon what other disorders, like OCD, accompany the Asperger's.

I thought Peter Fonda's portrayal of someone living with Aspergers was pretty good in "Back When We Were Grownups".

Punch-Drunk Love really hit home to me, even though it isn't directly about Aspergers.

Mostly what I se on TV with people that have Aspergers is criminal dramas where they are the killers and the talk about it as if Aspergers made people psycho and that they doesnt have feelings.
Me, being someone who has Aspergers, really hate that.

Myself I saw much of myself in 'Reg Barclay' from Star Trek TNG/VOY. Funny thing about that charakter is that he was created when Aspergers was mostly unknown so they didnt know they created a charakter with Aspergers, they just created a strange not normal guy of the type that existed and that we now know are people with Aspergers.

reply

I've never seen much about Asperger's Syndrome in films or on TV. Aside from Mozart and the Whale, I think the only other things I've seen where it was made evindent that it was Asperger's was a program about autism on the Health channel and an episode of one of the Law & Order series. That episode didn't exactly portray AS in a positive light. It was about a guy (played by Alfred Molina) who has AS and raped a girl because he smelled bleach, which he associated with memories of his nanny doing sexual things to him. That made me upset.

reply

I think they should make more Asperger movies just like there is with autism but please make them all different.

I was admired how they had all the ASD characters different than each other in this movie and how they were all effected differently by it but sadly people still weren't happy. IMO, no movie about AS will be good enough for everyone. Someone can make a movie about me and I gaurentee people will still complain about it and say how wrongly it protrays AS and how gives people the wrong impression about all aspies get sick in school and have to be taken out of school for a few months and how they all get their woman's bodies at a early age (12 years) and they all want friends real badly and want to be normal, etc. and ignore that fact it was about a real person, not some fictional character just like the fact people ignored about this movie being based on two real people.

The Aviator - Yes Howard Hughes was said to have OCD but watching that movie he had some Asperger traits.

Mr.Bean series

reply

Ben X all the way!! I could relate to all the cruelty that happens to the socially inept in the schoolyard, and all the trips to the doctor to find out what was "wrong" with me.

reply

I just picked this movie up. A few of my friends also recommend this one.

reply

If I ever write the story of my life, it'd be a darker version of Mr Bean. A clumsy social misfit who hates himself for not being able to take care for himself properly. Even preparing my coffee in the morning is considered to be hilarious by others.

It may be a joke to mention Mr Bean, but I really do feel that his character and mine are intertwined. With the only difference that I'm a real person feeling the pain that it generates when people laugh at you...

reply

Practically none of these movies are about Asperger's. Just fairly unique characters. I don't see how one could get Asperger's from Eagle Vs. Shark at all, they were just awkward. There's a big difference.

Maybe check out the animated movie Mary and Max. It's pretty good. Pretty different.

reply

I second Punch Drunk Love. I think anyone with Aspergers would instantly recognise themselves, while most people without Aspergers would need it spelled out. Telling.

reply

is it about Asperger's ? oor about how to write something funny?

reply

I agree with Benny and Joon... is a great movie!!
But 'The curious incident of the dog in the night-time' is a great book, about a boy with Asperger's... It is written by Mark Haddon
it's probably the best book i've read in a long time..
the character is named Christopher, and 'wrote' the book.. so you can see in his mind, which is some times funny, but mostly it is amazingly done...
(please don't mind my english,'I'm dutch xD)

There's a new one coming up. "Adam". It's promising. Looks like a great one.

I'd say Martian CHild is definitely a movie about a kid with Asperger's, even if it is not discussed in the film. I have Asperger's and related a lot to that movie

This isn't a feature film, but an amazing documentary of a surfer named Clay Marzo who has Asperger's called Clay Marzo: Just Add Water and there was an ESPN special on him that you can view for free. The link is below. My brother has Asperger's and this has really helped me understand Asperger's. I have seen the movie "Adam" and that was really good too but sort of dramatized for Hollywood

the Temple Grandin Biopic that was on HBO is an amazing movie about Temple Grandin, an Autistic animal scientist and a advocate in the Autism community. By her own admisson, Temple is less autistic and more Asperger like these days. I'd reccomand the movie to everyone....it is out on DVD now so go and get it!
