Terrell's Relationship w/Agnes

What was the deal with the mother/son relationship here? I mean, Agnes seemes to really adore her son, Terrell, but he acted like a complete jerk with his mother. What there some sort of subtext regarding her being overbearing, and thus subconciously pushing Terrell away? Did he resent his mother because there was no father figure present, even though it is made known the father died. Were his parents even married? I simply don't understand this mother/son relationship, it was confusing.

I assume there is some reason he won't let his mother kiss him but it's never explained. I mean, if that was supposed to "mean" something, gives us some clues. There was very little there to work with. I would say maybe it's about some kind of race thing, but race is never mentioned as any kind of barrier (except by the African American female Presidental adivosor...BTW, wouldn't that be a bigger "get" than a Senator...makes no sense!). It always surprises me to see the huge gaps in some indie movies. Could be that the director wants us to read into it.

She says in the interrogation she thought he blamed her for pushing him into the IT thing.

Amy: I swear to God...I swear to God! That is NOT how you treat your human!
