Little “quirky” twist. (Spoiler alert)

Spoiler alert:

This pertains to the end of the movie when the three of them (Father, Mother, Daughter) are watching the two dogs frolicking on the television screen…

Does this mean that the two “lost” dogs in the middle of the film were “his” all along? Or, does it mean that he “fostered” them after the homeless man got bashed?

reply

My mum was watching the movie, and I came in and watched it about half way through. From what I saw the ending was kinda abrupt , and I thought it was a bad way to end.

I just finished watching it five minutes ago. I have no idea what the dogs meant. They're not in the book either, so I can't enlighten you there!

I will think about it and get back to you if I have any epiphanies...

It’s got to be some kind of metaphor.

Maybe it represents some form of freedom? A freedom without restraints?

reply

Oh, we need to figure this out. This question is killing me. It must mean some kind of freedom, surely. Argh, we need some discussion, ideas!

reply

I was wonering about the dogs too..the freedom metaphor is a good idea..

It seems to be sometime in the future and the family has moved into more modest accommodation. In one of the opening scenes when Eddie returns home, he heads upstairs and we see the rug hanging in the stairwell, this time it is behind them in the living room. The dogs are symbolic memories of his rock-bottom experience, and in relative terms, things aren't as bad as they seem.
