It is well explained in the movie joao, and it also appears in the description of the movie on the back of the original dvd & vhs cover (there's no need to call any fatima's virgin for you to learn that).
1 - For starters, Joao Paisagem and Toni Canelas have been friends and colleagues since childhood, and they both shared the same master of course.
The thing is, their master was the protector of the Golden Seashell (Buzio Dourado), and whoever owns it becomes capable of controlling the whole world, so, Joao Paisagem (better known by his avatar "Evil Dragon") and after defeating the ninja master, he has to eliminate his ninja brother and possible successor of protecting the Golden Seashell... then he goes to Toni's place and kills his girlfriend because he hasn't arrived yet from a Martial Arts Tournament.
2 - This is a portuguese Ninja flick, not even mentioning that it's in fact a scholar work...
One of the things that make this a good film it's the fact that the last line of the hero is a name of a character which the viewer has no knowledge of(and don't forget that this film is also fully packed of with typical Martial Arts flicks clichès).
Obviously Joao Paisagem turns all evil and twisted after the creation of his alter-ego Evil Dragon, he doesn't kill Toni's girlfriend for revenge or boredom, nor is he mad... he has the power to dominate the whole world and want to use it, for this he must destroy his own ninja brother and rival. He kills Toni's girlfriend not only because he can and doesn't give a crap but also because he wants Toni to really suffer and shatter.
Toni really gets to hate Evil Dragon like that, would he hate and fight him if Joao hadn't killed his girlfriend? And would Toni fight Joao Paisagem if he knew it was him,only for the theft of the Golden Seashell even though that is his mission?
And would Joao Paisagem fight Toni if he was not giving his max to bringing him down? He kills Toni on their first fight alright... but Toni's already avenging his departed girlfriend and Joao has already embraced his Evil Dragon ninja side, makes you think hun?
