A Mormon Learn-To Get-Used-To-Us movie

Since I'm from Pennsylvania and not Utah, I've never yet, talked with, met, or come to know of any Mormons. Likewise since I woundn't have a problem talking with Mormons, Baptists, or those of any religion, there's no "lesson" on this movie for me. Rather I watched the movie in anticipation of hearing how the film would handle (even if in a comical fashion) discusions on the doctirnal issues that divided the religions in the first place. After all, here is where people of any to religions (or even the same religion) meet a chalenge! Unfortunatly this film didn't even go there! Even just a brief remark here and a tort but respectful comment there, would have certainly added much to this 'Plane-Jane' movie. What a plethorea of situations they could have taken advantage of, and instead it turns into a love story. Even closing the movie, after all is said and done, with, say, Jehovah's Witnesses or even Muslims moving in town would have provided a nice tongue-in-cheek type conclusion. Though the movie is watchable, it was such a sad waste of potential.

I am not LDS or Baptist either. I have recently taken much a great interest in many LDS movies though; as I ventured into a local LDS shop in my area I was told about from a LDS friend of mine. I was pleased to find they had a movie section and rented out their DVD's and VHS. I actually find them better than most mainstream so-called "comedies" that , unfortunatley for a large part, seem to rely on tired, played-out, sex jokes, lude remarks, nudity scenes, predictable frat boy comments, degrading of women, making light hearted humor of drug use, pre-martial sex, pornography and alcholism ( as if it is just assumed and expected of us all) stupid displays of physical comedy that is overdone, the same old over the top and rather annoying actors that do pretty much the same thing, say similar lines and make the same nerve racking noises and gestures in every movie they are in. Such as Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller etc...

It gets old and rather offensive after awhile. It makes me wonder about the mentality of our culture and where we are headed that we must rely on such deplorability to make us laugh. I wonder also if anyone truly enjoyes that banal ,trite and foretelling comedy or if they watch it simply because that is the twaddle Hollywood offers us. What choice do we have, right? Wrong.

Anyway, my point of that tangent was that, with the tomfoolery removed I actually found myself laughing at the LDS comedies I have watched lately ( I have also seen The Rm, The Home Teachers and Singles Ward.); and I mean not laughing because it was expected or because other people where. I actually laughed hard at some of the scenes. It is nice to see movies that I know certain scenes are not going to leave me insulted , rolling my eyes or completely revolted after I watch them; which unfortnatley most mainstream comedies, well movies in general , do that.

As far as the rivals between the LDS church and the Baptist, I wasn't aware of any. I wonderd however when I watched this film the same, if there was some conflict going on through the ages between the two churches, such as with Protestants and Catholics, or if it was just a themse used in this movie. I would like to find out more myself.

Nonetheless, I applaud LDS film makers as well as the LDS church for always having a strong moral conviction and message to give. I also appreciate that I can watch LDS movies and not have to go to confession ( Yes, I am proudly Catholic) afterwards.

That was very nicely said. I am glad someone appriciates these movies like I do. In Australia we actually dont get them unless we order over the internet...which is a hassle at times. It is a nice change to watch something that I know I wont go away from feeling slightly degraded in some way. I found the way the Baptists and Mormans came together at the end was a very nice touch. These movies aren't oscar worthy of course, but I still find them enjoyable. If only relegions came together like that in real life! I think even though we all beleive in lots of different things, (I am LDS or 'morman')there are many things like charity and aid for those who need it, and belief in some sort of higher power that can bring different denominations to repect each other. I know many people from other religeons and not for a second would I think worse of them for not choosing the life I have chose for myself.

I hope that made sense, I cant explain things very well. :)

That was very well said. Those are things I like about LDS films, as well. You don't have to fast forward through scenes, you dont walk away offended, and even though the film may suck, at least it wasn't inappropriate. I'll watch my favorite show and they have offensive, innacurate remarks about Mormon every now and then. It's nice to know that you don't have to worry about the films you're watching.

For you Baptists who found the acceptance thing offensive, it went both ways: Mormons accepting Baptists and Baptists accepting Mormons. The reason they chose Baptists for this movie and not like Atheists or Catholics is because in real life, Baptists and Mormons dont get along. Not all the people in these churches are like this, but some. I have a Baptist friend and I remember going to her church's activities and they'd ask me about my religion, and I said I was Mormon, and I remember not getting the happiest reaction from some people in the room. I'm not trying to offend anyone, but I'm trying to say that there is a little tension between the two groups, and that's why they chose Baptists for the movie.

Yes, I do agree that this movie was a cheesy love story at the end, but those are always fun to repeat and make fun of. Not to offend cheesy love stories.

To those who were offended, you could just twist your own words around and say that Mormons are less accepting than Baptists, making it less offensive to you. Personally, I don't believe that. I believe the groups are equally accepting, but certain people create those barriers and others will let bygons be bygons. But hey, whatever floats your boat and makes you happy. Don't work yourself up over a fictional movie. It wasn't made to offend you, and I'm sorry if it did.

No Im sorry. YOu do have to fast foward through scenes because they are almost too painful to watch. I'm not someone who comes on the boards and causes trouble. I'm not sure what an LDS film is. I'm not really concerned with any of the religious aspects of this film. Maybe thats why I found that there were absolutley no redeeming qualities. The dialogue appeared as if read off of a cue card. The actors obviously were hired for reasons other than their acting abilities. I am so confused as to who would have let this movie be made and who put it at my local video store and place awards all over the box from various film festivals so that poor innocent people like me are tricked into watching it??????

I just want to point out how amusing I find it how many people are talking about the supposed lessons, morals, etc. in this movie. I saw this as nothing but a comedy parodying the way people can be so bitter over the most ridiculous things.

I think that this movie as well as anyother movie made by mormons about mormons, was probably made to enteratin mormons and thereby to criticize it for being too mormon is kind of stupid because they weren't trying to make it to appeal to the masses

Thank you Card Stock! Actually I'm glad to see how many people enjoy LDS movies. I myself am LDS, and most of my family is not. Often they worry I'm spending too much time in the church because I watch so many LDS made movies, but what they don't understand is that when you watch one of these movies you don't have to worry about bad language or crude jokes, or having your eyes come across something they shouldn't see. Yea, Baptists at Our BBQ was pretty cheasy, but yet some how good at the same time. Actually to be frankly honest I've never noticed the Baptist vs. LDS thing, but then agian I'm oblivious to a lot of things. All together it was an ok movie.
