HORRIBLY MISCAST

This movie was a disgrace, and did the book no justice.

I totally disagree. I been a big fan of the book for years. I think Ruth and Maylene were cast perfectly. Their acting performances in this film do the book excellent justice.

I'd be interested to read the book because I did not "get" this movie, at all. There were parts I thought were supposed to be campy, but they weren't. There was little suspense and the characters were shallow. The only character I empathized with was the supposed villain, the mother. Ruth was portrayed as a pathetic idiot, and Ruby as a lazy idiot, so I couldn't support either of them. The brother and aunt were oddly out of context with the rest of the cast, and the ending was just too pat.

I never read the book and thought the movie was good. When a film is based on a novel, there will always be people who read the book first and think the movie messed things up, but there will also be people who never even knew it was based on a book and liked the film just fine. That's just how it is.

I haven't read the book, either, but I can say with all honesty that the movie depressed me something wrong! I was just kind of in shock with how it all ended.

I agree. It's like Flowers in the Attic. If you read the book then watched the movie, it's horrible. However I can see if a person didn't read the book but watched the movie first, it has a beginning, middle, and end so it works. It will always be like that when it comes to a book being made into a movie. (Except To Kill A Mockingbird. That was on point!)
