First, why did the brother leave during the reception? Was in just in a hurry to get back or was he fed up with the wedding? Second, was the aunt the sister of the mom or Ruth's father? Ruth's mom and aunt didn't seem to talk much.

I got the impression that they were sisters.
Ruth's Mom makes a comment right before the wedding-something to the effect that "She was Ruth's mother", not the other woman(the aunt)-and I just figured there must be blood between them for her to have that strong a reaction about the other woman showing that much concern for Ruth.
Why can't you just be happy for someone else's good fortune--then half the plots of all the movies ever made wouldn't work!!
