Question: Klein's and Vrinks' houses - how much do french cops get paid?

I enjoyed the movie a lot but I'm curious. Does the depiction of their living conditions have anything to do with reality? I understand both Klein and Vrinks weren't exactly straight arrows, but still. Could a french cop really have a mansion-like place (at least judging by the interiors - I don't remember if there was a shot of his house from the outside) like the one Klein had or is it just a visual tool to emphasize his big ego and the isolation from the rest of the police community?
