Are you referring to The Bank with David Wenham & Anthony LaPaglia. If so, yes, I've seen that one. Thats the only Bank I see when I search by that name(other than Bank Job which I saw and liked too) but you said an Australian movie, correct?? Can you post link to The Bank movie you are referring to? BTW, I also saw LA Confidential and it was a goodie. You didnt list this one but I believe Matt Damon's The Informant could easily go on your list And yes, Blood Simple and One False moves are good ones too. A Simple Plan wasn't on your list but was another winner and The Killer Inside Me was of the same ilk. There's another good one titled Albino Alligator(??) I believe is the name.

reply

yes, that wenham The Bank.he did a great job ,eh?, though it really was the screenplay that was the corker!
i thought i listed A simple plan! i LOVED The Informant but I actually laughed so much through it that i couldn't think of putting it in this list!

caveat emptor: i have long been a roger ebert devotee(this comes from seeing hundreds of films that, post-viewing, i agreed w/ his rating and review of the large majority of them); if he gives something 2 stars i rarely will choose to see it(albino alligator) and Killer inside me- i have been on the fence. If you think it was excellent i will reconsider, but otherwise, too many excellent films to seek out!

but you did kickstart my mental rolodex and i would add to my list
The Big Easy
Midnight in the garden of good and evil
the long goodbye(bob hoskins, helen mirren)
the gift
the fugitive
clay pigeons( a neglected great w/ vince vaughn as a coompletely convincing psycho)

Yes, yes, yes, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was EXCELLENT and the Fugitive is a classic 5 star movie. I read The Killer Inside me book first so I may be partial to the movie. It was very, VERY different! Albino Alligator was so long ago that i cant even remember the premise but it stands out in the recess of my mind as something i liked at the time.

reply

Speaking of kick starting mental Rolodex, how about Dirty Pretty Things (fr) and Match Pointe (w/ScarJo)? And, although I havn't seen it yet but plan to this weekend, Girl on the Train (fr). It's gotten rave reviews, you know it? There's another gem of a movie I recall from years ago where millions of diamonds were stolen from a bank through the sewage system by two disgruntled employees (janitor and secretary). Ring a bell??

reply

plse let me know what you think of girl on train. techine is exc exc but i was put off by the plot.

diamonds one sounds like the jason straitharn one i recently saw(i have a weakness for him) but i don't think they were employees.oh ohhhhhhh, it came to me. MICHAEL CAINE genuflect genuflect. yep, saw that. very good, i agree!speaking of which, how bout the one w/ him as a murderous office worker- cd cover has him looking through venetian blinds( btw, you are american, yes? so you know what they are?)

oooh boy, wait til you see She's One of Us!!!

yes, American (Hollywood CA actually)... I'll have to look into She's One of Us... Yup, it was Michael Caine in the movie Flawless I was referring to... Just saw Girl on the Train. Hmmm, its not bad but wont make my fav list. The first half seemed disconnected from the second half. Didn't mesh for me. It felt like watching two separate movies... Speaking of which, Separate Lies movie (Emily Watson) made my blood boil over Tom Wilkinson's character. If you know that movie you'll know what I mean... Off to watch Monsieur Hire (fr), heard great things, we'll see...

Oh, one more fav, Swimming Pool(fr)!!!!! you know it?

reply

A Shock To The System movie is Michael Caine peering through venetian blinds. Just looked it up but never saw that one. ***CORRECTION*** Dirty Pretty Things may have been British- not French. Had you seen it or Match Pointe?

reply

yes, except Train Girl, i've seen all you mentioned.yes, v much liked dirty pretty (oh so different from Oh my pretty!)and matchpt.(one of woody's best i think) you must have also liked cassandra's dream.now, since my mental rolodex works on the principle of 6 degrees of separation:
in dirty pretty things i was introduced to sergi lopez, a now fav actor, whose Harry..... french movie i avoided bec i thought i couldn't handle the creepiness. Also introduced me to chewetl edjiofor(sp)whose turn in david mamet's Red Belt you might like. A MUST SEE to be added to the master list,is mamet's House of Games, and then The Spanish Prisoner and Homicide.

no 6 degrees connection but Confidence , w/ edward burns, is a fav of mine. i REALLY liked the ending, which reminds me that i really liked the ending of True Romance. you?

i really liked mr hire but only saw it when it came out. i should watch it again.

Pretty random list there from the OP. I mean, this is a film about corrupt cops. So maybe it would make sense to limit the list to that subject matter?

- Narc
- Training Day
- Street Kings
- Dark Blue
- Son of No-One
- Pride and Glory
- Infernal Affairs and the US remake The Departed
- Copland
- LA Confidential
- Serpico

I am not saying there aren't any good films on the OP's list but why would someone who liked "36th Precinct" be likely to enjoy watching "Children of Men", "Black Book" or "Gosford Park", for example? These films couldn't be more different from "36th Precinct" if they tried. Maybe the post should read "a list of my favourite films" - although I am not sure this board would be the right place to post it.

Nice choices, I think that I will have to check a few of them out one of these days.
