Prester.

I think it was inspired by that planet water and fire in LEXX where they shared an atmostphere or something.....

Could have been.

Anyone have any ideas why the planet was called Prester of all names?

It’s possible that Prester, and/or the Fire/Water double planet from Lexx, were inspired by the 1985 Hard SF novel “Rocheworld”, which describes a double planet so close that they share an atmosphere. In the novel, one planet is water covered, the other barren, rocky and desert-like, except during brief periods when the configuration of the planetary system results in a massive flood from the water world to the dry. To the best of my knowledge, this was the first fictional depiction of such a double planet, predating Lexx, which released in 1997.

The English word “prester” is an archaic synonym for “presbyter” meaning anything from a king-like religious ruler to a simple priest, and the root of the Presbyterian, the religion.

Maybe this is a reference to the expected role of the guild by the original colonists?
Or, more likely I think, it’s just a cool-sounding name that struck the fancy of its creators at Gonzo?
