The dudes from the guild

Up to episode 9, I thought the dudes from the guild were girls, or at least one girl and one guy. But then Klaus refers to to Dio as "he" in the sub, so I thought it may be a subbing error, but then i checked in the official website and it said he was a dude and I was like "wtf?" Anyone else got confused with this?

Yeah. I imagine living with this guy's sister would turn me into a pretty wierd guy too...

Ya, japs love these sort of stuff

ya I felt the same way about Dio for the longest time I kept thinking it was a chick except for the fact they kept calling him lord dio. The damn voice sounded like a chick and really felt like Dio kept flirting with Klaus man that was disturbing in many ways ..

Dio really doesn't act all that "gay" if you want to call it that, or even like a woman. If anything, he acts like a child with the capabilities of a super-athletic adult, hence the clinging and his mannerisms. His voice and the way e acts are all supposed to reflect this. Reading any sort of "flirting" with Claus into this means that you misread Dio and his personality.

umm hello you all? these guys were "friendly" in the way Mr Jellineck and Mr. Nobblett were in Stranger with Candy... Must take another gay guy to realize... I actually thought that luciola was a girl first also, but it seems the creators were going after that all important Shonen Ai crowd which explains (at least partly) why alot of girls in Japan liked this even though the sci fi fantasy realm can really be a boys land... i dug it tho!

Hm. I used to think Dio was gay but I like your explanation better, TheWorldofAnime.

It is pretty clear that the writers were trying for "otherworldly" for Dio and ended up with a lot of effeminate qualities. Note that the English track for Luciola was voiced by a female actor.

At first I thought the character was a waste of time and a mistake, but he grows on you and he becomes a powerful statement of the politics between the Guild and the ground-dwellers.

More interesting is Alex Row's reaction to him. In spite of his supreme hatred of the guild and Dio's sister in particular, he decides to let Dio run loose aboard his ship with the most minimal supervision. However, given the huge technological advantage the Guild has over everyone else, I wonder that the Silvana would even be capable of restraining Rio and Lucianno should they have decided to leave.

Good story.

It bears noting that Principle Dio is voice acted by a woman, for obvious reasons. I believe she's Junko Noda, an actress that has performed for dozens and dozens of anime series'.

Anyways, I attribute Dio's "behaviour" to the life-style he's grown up in with the guild. He's very immature, and has little appreciation for realities, most notably death. You see him hanging off the edge of Silverna, doing careless stunts in his Starfish and Vanships alike. Furhermore, he hasn't matured socially and is still very much a child.

It bears noting that Bart Simpson is voice acted by a woman.... for obvious reasons, too?

He had a very domineering sister which may have helped shape his personality

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who noticed the obviously female facial features, hair style and voice.
