I've just seen the movie: it was really touching and original. But i would like to know one point: can someone tell me please every song we can hear in Tarnation? Because i've found them FABULOUS!
Thanks for all your answers, and obviously thank you Jonathan for your movie, so "unique"!
Hello, I agree that the music on "Tarnation" was excellent - I only identified a few among the songs.
Lisa Germano "Reptile" Lisa Germano "A Beautiful Schizophrenic" (right after the scene with his mother and the pumpkin) Cocteau Twins "???" (anyone?!)
There were at least 3 songs by Low, one of them sung by Mimi Parker and taken by the album "Take Me Home - A Tribute To John Denver". Then, two songs by Mark Kozelek (the closing song) - one of which may be Red House Painters. Obviously, there were also The Magnetic Fields and Nick Drake. It would be cool if someone could provide a full list! best wishes to all!
The song Dolly Parton sings and later in the film is reprised by Renee is "A Little Bitty Pissant Country Place" from the movie "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas."
Add "Wichita Lineman" by Glen Campbell to the other songs on the soundtrack
Also, there's the beautiful "Frank Mills", from the musical Hair. I don't know who sings it. It goes like this: "I met a boy called Frank Mills, on September 12th right here, in front of the Waverly, but unfortunately, I lost his address..."
But what I'd really like to know is the name of a very slow song, sung by a woman, in the first third of the movie. Very atmospheric and slow... Does anybody know its name?
As a matter of fact, there is one song that is stucked in my mind. It looks like Kate Bush, a voice like that, very high ; it's a girl who sings a very melancolic song and It's so beautiful that i want to see the movie again so as to hear this song one more time...
In fact, the song I was looking for is the one we car hear when Jonathan introduced all of his own movies he made, during the eighties. This song is so beautiful. If anyone knows precisely this one...
Following are all of the songs you heard in Tarnation. Glad you enjoyed. There was also original music composed and recorded by Max Avery Lichtenstein and original score composed and recorded by John Califra.
Laserbeam - Low Naked As We Came - Iron and Wine Wichita Lineman - Glen Campbell Reptile - Lisa Germano Ice Pulse - Cocteau Twins Frank Mills - From HAIR Walking In Space - From HAIR The Ballad of Lucy Jordan - Marianne Faithful Diviner - HEX Embrace - Low Mysteries of Love - Blue Velvet It's All Over - Chocolate Watch Band Strange Powers - Magnetic Fields After Loving You - Jean Wells Pissant Country Place - Dolly Parton Around and Round - The Red House Painters Back Home Again - Low How Many Times - Mavis Staples Around and Round (end credits) The Red House Painters
First of all, thank you-thank you for the list of the songs. Great to know. Secondly, thank you for your talent and hard work in making it happen. I saw the movie this past weekend and I was just blown away. It was absolutely astounding. I've told many people to go see the movie or at least check out the website. I will be going again to see it with a friend of mine. I have many, many questions but mainly....do you see the possibility of a soundtrack being released with these songs and the original score. I'm sure tons of people would like to buy it. I haven't done my homework so I am not sure if something like this already exists or is being worked out.
Two of the Low songs ("Laser Beam," from the opening credits, and "Embrace" with the chorus "It won't last/ Hold on fast") are available on their tremendous album "Things We Lost in the Fire." Recommended. And thanks to those above, for the soundtrack info.
I really appreciate you posting this information. One of the many pleasures of this film was being introduced to Low. What a terrific group. I picked up a copy of "Things We Lost in the Fire" and have really enjoyed it.
John Califra's and Max Avery Lichtenstein's music is also a cut above original score music. Thanks to the company for putting it for download on their website.
I had a chance to see "Tarnation" a second time. Hard to believe I liked it even more than on first viewing. For all those who contributed to this project, it was an enormous pleasure to watch.
I just wanted to let someone connected with Tarnation know that the film hit home with me.
The facts of Jonathan's life coincide very closely with those my of partner who passed away 10 years ago. My partner was born in Lousiana about 10 years before Jonathan and was adopted by his aunt. When my partner was dying, he tried to establish contact with his genetic father, who sadly refused to see him. Eerily, Jonathan even resembles my partner - my partner was of Cajun background.
These similarities all contributed to my silently weeping throughout the film the first time. The second time I was more composed and could appreciate its finer points.
Please thank Jonathan for making the film. It has been very healing for me.
I just saw Tarnation this evening and it affected me so deeply. I too cried. It parallels my life and the life of my son in many, many ways.
The fact that I am the same age as Jonathan Caouette also impacted me, since I could relate to a lot of the cultural references.
Some critics are saying that Tarnation is self-indulgent, but I disagree. He had a story to tell and it is one that is normally told in exploitative movies of the week or on Dateline.
One rarely gets to see a person evolve from age 10 to 31 as Caouette has allowed us to.
WOW! I'm thrilled about knowing the music in this film, thank you. I did, however, try looking for the last song, Around and Round by the Red House Painters and can't find it on any of their cds- can you or anyone out there tell me which cd it's on? Thanks! Michelle
It's actually Mark Kozelek solo, and it's a cover of a John Denver song. It's on his e.p. Rock 'N' Roll Singer, on the John Denver tribute album Take Me Home: A Tribute to John Denver, and on his compilation If You Want Blood.
Thank you! But maybe it's not the song I am looking for after all as I got to hear a clip from Amazon.com and there were lyrics on it.... I'm looking for the instrumental guitar/piano etc.. song that I thought was on the end credits.... It's also on the I-saw-Tarnation website, they play a loop of it over and over.... Do you know which song that is? Much appreciated!!! Michelle
Oh, i know what you mean. That's the film's original score by Max Avery Lichtenstein. It's not available on cd, but all the songs are available at http://www.tindrum.com/tarnation/index.html. I can't remember which one it is, but i think it's the song titled "Tarnation". They all sound pretty similar though.
does anybody know how to get 'it's all over now , baby blue"? it sounded like mick jagger but it's another band. Anyway, does anyone know how to get a copy?? thanks
With all the interest that folks have expressed about the music in Tarnation, Tin Drum Recordings has decided to post downloadable MP3s of some of the original music tracks we provided for the film and trailer. You can download these songs at the following address:
> Dylan's It's All Over Now, Baby Blue. Sung by.... Marianne Faithful
Oh no, I thought it was a version by Van Morrison that I'd not heard, but it is by the Chocolate Watch Band, as listed above.
The song Frank Mills from Hair is from Milos Forman's filmed version of the play (with Treat Williams, et al), and the frickin' LP/CD doesn't list who is singing the Mills song. Tacky.
that album by the way is, to me at least, better than the Broadway cast version. There's a version of Easy to be Hard, by Cheryl Barnes, that will just flat out blow you away. Check it out.
Thanks, too, for posting that complete list of the film's songs -- I wondered which Cocteau Twins cut that was.
I want to especially thank Bob and Max for their generous listing of the track information and the generosity of posting the music and i also want to suggest that whoever controls this site changes the movie review fronting the imdb webpage for this movie. While a legitimate review, it is not a popular one and in fact is rather superficial (and wrong).
What is the song playing when the screen is divided into four and Jonathan is lip synching to a song sung by a little girl in a really high pitched voice.
this is really weird that i found all this!! i was lucky enough to get in on the last half of this movie a couple of nights ago, i guess on sundance channel. although some parts were hard to watch, i couldn't stop. i wanted to see what happened with his life and with renee's. i noticed that the music was fantastic and i loved the john denver song and watched through the credits to see if i could figure out which song it was. so i decided to look up some info on it today and never thought i'd find the whole list of songs!!! thanks to all of you who've posted info on it.
anyone know the song where the guy sings something like "I have a crush on this guy in theater arts that looks just like Nick Drake. He lives out in the woods and he's a great musician. HE CARVES DK AND ZZ TOP ON HIS LEGS." ?? I would really appreciate your help, it was such a fantastic song. All the best.
I too very much enjoyed the movie and the soundtrack. My personal favorite was the Cocteau Twins song. I hadn't much listened to them but was inspired to order the CD.
so, there's no soundtrack available in it's entirety? ahhhhhh!! the music was totally awesome. chocolate watchband, seriously? i could have sworn it's all over now was the stones.....
