Fans of Primer NEED to check out Steins;Gate

If you liked Primer for how complex the time travel narrative was in the different timelines found within the story, then you will love an Anime series called Steins;Gate, which in my opinion does it much better.

Don't let the fact that it's an Anime put some of you off, as it doesn't really have the tropes that a lot of people dislike about the medium. This is an incredible series with many loveable and fleshed out characters, brilliant writing, a gripping plot, great balance of comedy and drama, unexpected twists and turns and overall, it's an emotional roller coaster ride. The 1st half slowly gets more intriguing as the story progresses, but once you get to the end of Episode 12, you won't want to stop! It's quite possibly the greatest time travel story ever told as far as I'm concerned.

I loved Steins;Gate and think its flatout better than Primer in basically every way, but I think you'd have a hard time saying it doesn't have common anime tropes when a huge part of the story involves not only how the cast love anime but things specific to anime culture, like the Akihabara setting, cosplay, 2chan, catgirl maid cafes, visual novels etc. I could very easily see unsuspecting viewers being thrown off by this kind of stuff.

This also kind of depends on the version of the story you see I guess. The original VN has a lot of it, the anime cuts a lot of it down, and the English dub of the anime trims even more of it off.
