Parallels to the dot.com era

The Boondock Saints production has some interesting parallels to the dot.com era. (See the films E-Dreams and Startup.com for reference.)

- It happens in the economically heady mid to late 90s.

- Big inside players give large amounts of money to young, unproven newcomers.

- Young, unproven newcomers are big on bluster and promise, but short on ability to deliver results.

- After a briefly prosperous time, everything comes crashing down.

It makes me wonder if Miramax and New Line got caught up in the same hype as the e-commerce venture capitalists - that the old ways were dead and the future lay in the hands of these new wunderkind.

An interesting and astute post. I never thought about it, but one could take this film and its story as a sign of its times, or an allegory for them....

Nice analysis.

The late 90's were a crazy time, "Indie" was king, websites were going to change how we do business etc. etc. A similar thing happened in the 70's, all kinds of crazy projects were being green lit because of the success of movies like Easy Rider.

Also keep in mind the events in this movie take place just before piracy downloading became popular so the entertainment industry was at it's peak, they had more money than brains.

The rise of indie films came about in the 90s because of all these new millionaires looking to become film moguls too.

Are you rich? Would you like to invest in a movie? You get to hang out with movie stars!
