Could MXO be resurrected as a free-to-play MMO with Microtransactions?
What a shame that SOE couldn't have been the one to add a free-to-play option and a microtransaction store to a subscription-based MMO. They could have saved The Matrix Online.
Dungeons and Dragons Online was suffering abysmal subscription revenue, and Turbine Entertainment took a gamble and added a Free to play option that granted free access to the core game and its main questline, and they brought an online microtransaction store into the game to allow players to purchase items and questlines piecemeal. The pricing of these microtransactions were such that they were easily affordable, and yet high enough to make subscribing more cost effective, but only if one desired to access content beyond the core game.
The result was a massive influx of players, many of which actually subscribed. So rather than facing extinction, new life was breathed into the game and it is actually now thriving. So much so that Turbine recently applied a similar approach to Lord of the Rings Online...
So I am wondering if The Matrix Online could be resurrected under a similar business model. Download the game for free. Play for free. Have an Online Store that allows the unlocking of a massive amount of content above and beyond the core game. Mission Packs, RSI customization options, Convenience item purchases, and services.
Have a writing team that creates weekly missions with both solo and group aspects.
