News as of 9/24/06

I attended the Bret Easton Ellis reading and signing at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 24 2006. During the brief Q & A, a member of the audience asked Bret what his favorite film adaptation of one of his books was and if anything was happening with Glitterati. As most might know, he said he really liked the Rules of Attraction and then talked about Glitterati.

He said that he has, in fact, seen it and that it does actually exist. He went on to describe it as "terrific" and "fantastic," and said that it was a whole movie of Kip Pardue playing Victor Ward going around Europe seducing and having sex with various women. He then stated that Roger Avary is not intending to ever release it in theaters or on DVD. He said that it was a possibility that Avary might have a screening at some point in the future, but that it is not intended for the public to see.

Well, there you go. No mention of the Glamorama movie.

Glitterati isn't an adaptation.

No, I cannot. I suspect, and I could be completely wrong, that the footage for Glitterati (and the bit used in Rules of Attraction) was shot and paid for on the budget of Rules of Attraction. And that the decision to edit all the rest of the footage together was made posthumously. Furthermore, for all I know, Avary edited it at home with Final Cut (Rules was edited on Final Cut).

You have no idea what posthumously means. You make it sound like Avary died.

reply

Word.

It's very unfortunate that the masses won't likely see it (or Glamorama for that matter).

More than likely problems with the segment used in the film. A problem with someone in "character" approaching people, drinking, and then having sex with them. Also the a whole mess of other assortment of items that people may have taken. Probably same problems that Girls Gone Wild have had. Victor Goes Wild or Glitterati may have some somber people regretting being filmed. Victor running around and having sex, sounds like a European X film. If Avary wants to keep this in stash, so be it. Just hurry and make Glamarama already. I can't wait for that. Adapted for the screen and Directed by Roger Avary: Glamarama.

Apparently “Prince” has various music and videos (never released) that he keeps safely in his vault. I guess some people just like him do this for their own personal satisfaction. My guess Avary is doing the same.

I believe I saw some of those available on amazon. He had a bunch only able to purchase on his website for a while there. Avary may not. His site was one of the greatest places to visit. Now it's bare bones. He's been heavily busy at work. One day, who knows.

reply

maybe he made it just for himself, ellis, and their friends. Jean Cocteau made a film only for his friends.

i personally do not see the adaptation of glamorama ever being released due in part to the fact that ben stiller already stole the books bases and made that dog sh*t Zoolander. who knows though, maybe theyre trying to let Zoolander drift out to sea and then make Glamorama and release it when people have long forgotten about stiller's garbage.

reply

Could you please explain to me what you are talking about? Sorry, I know that sounds rude or sarcastic, but it's not, it's a serious question. What does Zoolander have to do with Glitterati, Bret, or anything else being discussed?

Oh and for the record, I actually kinda liked Zoolander. I think Ben Stiller is a great actor. He's had a kinda crappy run for awhile - Duplex, Along Came Polly, Starsky and Hutch, Envy - but for the most part, I think he's a hilarious guy that can also pull off a dramatic role (can anyone say "Permanent Midnight?" I seriously think he should have got an Oscar for that.). Plus Zoolander is one of my wife's favorite films, so I see it a lot. Now it's become like one of those six or so movies they ALWAYS play on TBS, one that's kinda funny, and you've seen it so many times you get favorite parts, lines you can repeat, stuff like that.

Anyways, WAYYYY off topic, and way too long. Sorry. I just wanted to know how Ben Stiller fell into our Bret Easton Ellis/Glitterati/Roger Avary soup, so if you (or someone else) could explain it, I would appreciate it.

No no, you misunderstood. It wasn't stated that Zoolander ripped off Glitterati, it was that the movie was a direct ripoff or Glamorama (with some more slapstick thrown in). Now don't get me wrong, I love Zoolander, probably one of my favorite Stiller flicks, but it was kind of odd reading the book (seeing as I saw Zoolander first) and feeling like, Oh, I've seen this before. Anyways, I hope that clears things up.

reply

Yeah, that does clear things up, thanks. Now I guess I GOTTA read the book (Glitterati) just to see for my self. 1700 pages of self indulgent 80's based crap. Great...[LOL]...

WAY OT, but speaking of 1700 pages of crap, Vincent Bugliosi, prosecutor and author of the Chrlie Manson trial (and book), put out a 1700 page book just last month about why Lee Harvey Oswald *IS* the "lone nut" JFK assassin, why the Warren Commission *IS* 100% correct, and why every person who says otherwise is nuts or has a commie agenda. It even comes with a CD-ROM citing all his sources. I wanna read it cuz it'll be hilarious but jeez louise.

Hey, let's make this NOT OT - imagine the movie this book will make (every single one of his other books has become at least a TV movie)! You wanna talk about self indulgent crap? My god...

The book is Glamorama, it is about 500 pages, it is set in the 90s and it is a fantastic book

It seems pretty obvious why it wouldn't be released. Avary pretty much got away with having Lionsgate fund his hedonistic vacation under the guise of being part of the film. Granted it was probably one of the better parts of the film, but it was completely superfluous. So really all Avary has is 70 hours of home movies/amateur porn. And I don't buy this Kip Pardue was in character, so therefor it was moviemaking. In the book, Victor stays at hostels and doesn't do that well with the ladies. In the movie, he stays at the best hotels and sleeps with various models, hangs out with "superstar" DJs, etc. Why? Because he was not bumming around Europe in character as Victor. He was traveling Europe as that famous actor from "Remember The Titans."

How they got people to sign releases is beyond me. Judging from the footage, the women often look drunk. So if they signed legal documents in that state, it doesn't usually hold up in court. If any of these models didn't want footage of them having real sex with Kip Pardue (not "Victor) shown on Arthouse theaters throughout metropolitian America, they could probably sue.

By the way, how lame is that Avary pretends that you're not suppose to like Ellis' characters (as he is quoted as saying) when he clearly does? He wants to do these horrible amoral acts and then just say, "Oh it was a pretend. Kip was acting. I was just directing. I'm a good person for real. If I wasn't, I wouldn't be vegan." Just cop to it. You're a bit of a pervy douche. How many times during that trip do you think Avary mentioned his Oscar to woman at the bars? I mean, Avary is the guy who showed Sossamon her rape scene on his laptop at a strip club. I think that speaks volumes.

According to this interview with the BBC, Roger Avary and Greg Shapiro (producer who also went on the trip with Roger and Kip)they told each person what they were filming for and made them sign a release. So I don't think release forms are the reason this film hasnt been released.

BBC Roger Avary Interview
How did you film the spectacular "Victor's Trip To Europe" sequence?

I told Kip Pardue (who plays Victor), "I intend to follow you around Europe but I don't want Kip in Europe, I wanna go to Europe with Victor. You're in character from when we get on the plane until we return." I had a couple of cameras following him, shooting constantly, with the producer following us with release forms. Kip would go to a party as Victor, who is a complete ********! Yet, for some reason, girls were always gravitating towards him. Very briefly I'd explain what we were doing, I'd show them some mini DVD footage, we'd get releases, Kip would fall back into character and we'd continue. Invariably, we'd end up at the hotel room with these girls and I'd be shooting this stuff thinking,"This is insane... and ethically questionable."
