Okay, I am usually quite good at figuring out weird plot elements...
but what in the heck was going on when they showed the scientist
(Ona) going back to her family and little girl... but then actually
shooting her?

I missed that part of the movie, I watched 20 minutes of it starting at the half way point in the movie. Holy crap, I can't believe this movie was even made. One of the biggest wastes of twenty minutes ever!

That was her yearning to be back with her daughter, much like when someone wants something so bad that they imagine themselves with it.
