Phil Gordon's Leaving

I read over at the BRAVO message board that Phil's leaving the show! I'm deeply saddened and concerned about this and what it means for the future of CPS. Does anyone have any more detail than that?

reply

Do you know if he's leaving before the 8th season or after and who might replace him

reply

I love CPS, but if Phil leaves, I can guarantee the show will be left in shambles. It'd be like the Price is Right after Bob Barker passes. You won't find many poker pros who could contribute both poker knowledge and charisma like Phil Gordon.

However, if I'm going to speculate possible suitors, Daniel Negreanu could be a candidate, but I think his sense of humor might be just a little too goofy. I saw Mike Matusow do some guest commentary on Ultimate Poker Challenge and he was pretty good, but they probably don't want someone with Matusow's record. The other "Tiltboys" would be as entertaining as Phil, but they don't have the same kind of name recognition.

reply

Phil Ivey would bring a certain coolness and he's certainly well known. I don't know much about his personality off camera though. Don't know if he'd be funny.

reply

Sam Farha'd be a nice commentator....Or Mike "The Mouth" Matusow.

I suspect it's just a rumor though. In an interview a few months ago Phil Gordon said he loves working with Foley and has a great time with the show. I can't imagine he'd leave.

reply

I know he's gotten a little calmer, but I don't think Matusow is pleasant enough at all. He'd be a good commenter for real pros, but not this show, in my opinion.

reply

Antonio Esfandiari might make for an interesting choice. But Antonio isn't as knowledgeable about the odds and the mathematical part of the game as some other pros.

reply

My guess is that it is going to be someone from Full Tilt Poker.com. I think whoever it is will have a little trouble at first, but come across fine by their first championship game.

reply

I was watching Phil play on Full Tilt a couple weeks ago and he confirmed that he is no longer with the show and that it was a decision on both their parts. He didn't say why or what happened, though.

reply

I would really hate to c Phil go he and Dave make such a great team. is there any known reason as to why he is leaving

reply

It was in an interview that Phil mentioned it, so I’m not thinking it’s a rumor. Also, I don’t believe that they’ve shot Tournament 8 yet, so I’d venture to guess that this was it for Phil…I hope I’m wrong.

In terms of a replacement, it’s going to be hard. It’s not just about personality and knowledge, which I’m sure several pros have, it’s also about chemistry, in particular with Dave, but also with the other celebrities. Currently, everyone involved seems to have fun and if that element is lost, than so much for the show. IMO

reply

I don't know if he'd want to do it, but what about Gabe Kaplan?

reply

Wow, I never thought of that. . . I heard he's done some commentary, so maybe he would consider it. . . I used to think he was the funniest guy on earth. The only thing is, they might want someone not known for anything other than being a pro, to balance out the "non-serious" host.

reply

I think Gabe Kaplan would be a good choice, because he did the commentary at the World Series of Poker back in the mid 90s and also earlier this year he did commentary at the National Heads Up Poker Championship.

reply

I totally agree with this. I think the show would be pretty much dead if Phil leaves. Negreanu could be a good replacement, but I think he's a bit too much like Foley. Definitely not Matusow. What about Chris Ferguson, perhaps?

reply

I'd like to see Daniel Negreanu or Annie Duke fill Phil's shoes, though I'm sorry to see him go.

Phil's a good host and a really good guy. I had an opportunity to meet him when I watched the filming of CPS. He's very friendly and extremely TALL!

I like Annie Duke to replace Phil, since she and he are friends and she's got a good ease about speaking on TV.
Yeah,it'll be a shame to see him go. He and Dave hit it off great!

MELLON:The Great Gatsby...He was...GREAT!

reply

Yes, Phil G. will be hard to replace, since he is a top player, but doesn't really talk down about the amateurs/celebs too much. You can tell he wants to blow his stack sometimes and manages to hold it in and he really gets tired of players 'limping in' with low raises or calls.
Dan Negreanu would be a good replacement since he does like to yak, but doesn't seem to grind. Chris Ferguson or Phil Ivey would work if they could be more magnanamous and not as reserved as they seem to be in the tournaments.
It would be hilarious to have Matusow or Helmuth in for one round each and just let them loose with whatever comments they want. The celebs might not be comfortable with it, but it could be good for ratings. And it's all for charity, right?

reply

OMG - I really could not stomach Helmuth. Really, I would not watch. Matusow could be fun for one round. . .

Ah, just think of all the Dave mocking that would take place if Helmuth were to host once!

I don't know if I saw this up there or not, but Phil "The Unabomber" Laak could be a really good choice. He's done dealing for E! with their own form of celebrity poker of sorts. He was able to keep up with the actors and was very funny along the way. He also really seems to be an approachable guy like Phil Gordan was. Besides, he could always wear his trademark hooden sweatshirt for the special shows...

Extremely sad to hear that Phil Gordon's leaving. Urgh! Gordon and Foley have
such a great natural chemistry together - one that is not easy to find. Phil
Gordon spits out information faster than most people can even assess the players' hand (but is also excellent and patient explaining things - also rare for such a true pro) and Foley is the perfect comedic "I'm confused - but provide wit and levity" foil.

It's also obvoious that they genuinely enjoy each other's company (as opposed to barely standing each other's company) and that translates well on-screen and make the loser's lounge a sort of well-informed light after-party.

They both really know how to handle celebrities (not an easy chore) without
humouring them too much. And I'll miss Phil and Dave's teasing comments about tournament director Robert Thompson. It's a shame but when Phil Gordon leaves
so will the easy charm and (1/2 of the) relaxed, knowing wit of the show that makes watching these celebrities all tham much more bareable.

Phil Gordon will be impossible to successfully "replace".

reply

Don't worry, as far as I know, it's just speculation. Somebody commented on the rumor and we went on to discuss who would be a good replacement.

on his myspace www.myspace.com/philgordonpoker On one of his blogs entries hes giving a contest and one of the things he was giving away was a autographed picture of him and Dave Foley on the set of CPS, and he said it will be one of a kind because as we all know he officially left the show. Also in some article for I think it was pokermagazine.com it asked what the hardest thing ever to do was and he said leaving CPS cause he loved the show.

Are you serious? Really? I can't think of a more unpleasant person. He whines more than my 5 year old niece. I can take Mike the Mouth, he has moments where he's entertaining, IMHO, but I can't stomach Phil H. I wouldn't watch one episode.

Sorry to say, I believed you, but still had to check it out for myself. I feel much better seeing that they cite "other sources". That could be anybody and not really mean anything. I can't imagine why thay'd go from Phil G. to Phil H.

Anyway, thanks for the info.

well, it's official: "Phil Hellmuth, a nine-time bracelet winner in the World Series of Poker, is taking over for Phil Gordon as the show's poker expert. Comedian Dave Foley will return as host."
that makes me pretty upset.. why would phil leave? it wasn't like he was unhappy, right? ugh..

reply

Gordon was probably getting bored with doing the show. One thing for sure is that Hellmuth will be alot more critical about the celeb players. it go something like "What kind of an ass goes all in with that hand!?"

Wow, what a poor, poor, poor, poor, poor, poor, poor, poor, poor, choice.

reply

I agree. I just found out Phil Gordon is not going to co-host. He was one of the main reasons I tuned in each season. He's intelligent and a good player without being arrogant. He just knows the game. On the other hand, Phil Hellmuth is just an arrogant a**. So disappointed. Guess that is one thing I won't have to add to my Tivo. Sad. Why did he leave?

reply

Santos2006: According to an interview with CardPlayer Magazine it said that he was tired of people raising like $500 into a ten thousand dollar pot. Along with a couple of other reasons.

I don't know myself, but I can understand Phil wanting to leave. Maybe he's just plain bored. I just can't comprehend thinking Hellmuth is the one to replace him. Uhm, he's tall and his name is Phil, the dumb viewing public won't really notice the difference between the two. . . .

He's also up for a new Fox show with pros in what's being called "speed poker" 15 seconds to make a bet, check, fold, call, whatever. I enjoy Phil's commentary (Gordon) but everything I've seen from Phil Hellmuth leads me to believe that if he's not playing, he's actually probably got some really good insight (even Phil Gordon will call Hellmuth to talk hands when they're not playing at the same table). I doubt that he'll banter with Dave Foley as well though (Phil G: If he doesn't call with this hand, I'm going to shoot myself in the head with a bazooka. Dave Foley: Well, you've got the arms).

reply

I've no doubt he knows what he's talking about. It's just, one of the criteria of being a good host is having a good or at least interesting personality. He has neither. I suppose if this were a serious poker show, that wouldn't matter, but this isn't a serious poker show. This is for fun, and he takes the fun factor down to zero as far as I'm concerned. Okay, I suppose I should stop with the Hellmuth bashing now. I was serious when I said I wouldn't watch with him as host, so I'll just take this board off my favorites -

reply

Hellmuth has confirmed that he has just finished shooting the 8th season of the show. He said he was pleasantly surprised with the play of the celebs.

reply

I don't mind Hellmuth. I have seen him host other poker shows and he is pretty insightful and gives good tips to the viewers but I have learned more from Phil Gordon than anyone else. He is really enjoyable to watch and it will be very tough to replace him.

reply

I have long been a fan of the show and I remember back when Phil Gordon was a fairly wooden co-host to Kevin Pollack. While the Hellmuth does not have experience with a poker show that is not serious, I think he will be able to present interesting knowledge and commentary without being arrogant. The Poker Brat did good commentary for several WSOP Main Event final tables in the 1990s without his famous ego coming into play. From a marketing standpoint, he is probably going to attract more people than he repeals. I am eager to see it.

reply

Agreed. I will no longer be watching the show as well... Though, apparently unlike others, I would not have watched the show if "The Mouth" was co-host either.

They really should have picked someone... I don't know... pleasant. I can't even stand to listen to Hellmuth's voice, let alone the words that come out of his mouth...

Lost regular viewer here.

reply

I miss Phil Gordon. Hellmuth is by far my least favorite "famous" poker player. I was stunned when I heard The Brat would be replacing him but so far Hellmuth has been an impressive commentator. I only wish he had better sportmanship when he played the game.

reply

i am so desperately depressed watching phil h. talk to much, look into the camera with the same pasted on smile and never being as funny. he's way too self-aware and obnoxious. i can't stand it! i want MY phil back!

reply

Very self-aware, yes. He is not nearly as fun to watch as Phil Gordon and I don't think that he and Dave Foley are a good pair. When Gordon did it, he and Foley were a team. Hellmuth seems to be his own man and while it is refreshing to get his perspective, I would still much rather watch Phil Gordon.
