Ending?

What was the story at the end of movie? Apparently this was years later and she had a family but I could'nt
understand the significance of what looked like some kind of army base they were walking towards!

Doesn't it state that it is 1956, so it could be during the suez crisis.
Not only is soldier training shown, but a kibbutz named Stein is seen, perhaps in recognition of Rachel's family.

It is 1956 and Israel is at war. Remember her quote, "Will it ever end," when she learns of her lover's death? War never truly ends. I thought it a magnificent and poignant ending. This is one of my favorite films of all time.

It shows how Ellis got out of a war (as a victim) and then got into another one (as an aggressor)ยท It also shows how Ellis failed to realize how to stop the cycle of violence, first because she executed Hans cruelly, insteed of turning him to the authorities (repeating the same mistake that the anti-nazi dutch made when they thought she was a nazi) and second because she used the money stolen by Hans to finance a colony, instead of supporting peace and reconciliation activities. The ending is perfect in that sense, as it shows the connection between the atrocities commited by the nazis to the jews and the atrocities commited by the israeli jews on the palestinians.

Thanks for explaining.
Very few would send Hans to the authorities if we were in Ellis's place.
But the ending doesn't show it (directly) that the attack is on Palestine.
