Mark Foo

So what really happened to Mark Foo? Did they ever find out?

reply

Like they said in the movie. It's all speculation but they believe he hit the bottum and his leash got stuck. So he couldnt paddle up for air.Poor guy,the world of big wave surfers has lost many brave guys.

Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?

reply

Ironically, his fatal wave was a smaller wave: 12 feet, compared to 15-18 foot sets that day.

His board had broken in two pieces - a small rear section with his body attached to the legrope was found a distance away from the front section. Mavericks is a very rocky craggy bottom and the leash getting stuck underwater is a very plausible explanation.

They cover it in the NBC coverage of 2006 Mavericks, as well, which is what you get as the Mavericks 2006 official DVD. And it's suggested that Foo simply was knocked unconscious, not necessarily that his leash caught. That seems to contradict the testimony in this film that Parsons brushed by someone struggling, and thought it was Little, rather than Foo.

Also the Dr at the scene said he had no viasable marks of trauma. Being knocked unconcious would suggest he would have a mark on his head. Also, it seems like his body would wash ashore quicker if he wasn't being held down.

reply

Mark on his head? Maybe not evident at the scene. Also no sign of struggle, perhaps? It's unclear. There are conflicting accounts, at any rate.

Mavericks is a GNARLY spot. I used to live out in Pacifica, just up the coast from Half Moon Bay when Mavericks was first getting coverage...around 90-91. We used to go out to Pillar Point and watch these waves just pound...Un-friggin-believalble stuff. I grew up surfing in the 80's and Mark Foo was one of the guys I looked up to. Watching this movie, and seeing the last wave he ever rode...knowing it was the last time anyone ever saw him alive...that was hard for me.

reply

One of the doctors at the scene did say he had a scratch on his forehead
