Why did they make Maria lip synch? I mean, her voice was beautiful.

They didn't think it was quite good enough, because there are opera-like notes that have to be hit.

I love Natalie's Voice but realistically Natalie didnt have the range she needed for West Side Story.

Perception of singing talent will always be influenced by individual preferences. Personally, I thought Natalie had a beautiful singing voice. It wasn't a perfect voice, it was better--it had personality, and the imperfections gave a sense of vulnerability. I personally would rather listen to her than Marni Nixon any day. But I can certainly see why some would disagree.
