Ideologues

Ivy, my heart flies to you. You are a wonderful, strong woman and desrve a lot of credit. So does your father.
I write in order to attempt to fill in a missing piece on why your grandparents stood so steadfastly in silence procaliming an innocence they lacked.
I am a cuban-american. Cuba is a disaster which gets worse by the hour. The people are the ones sufering to extrems we can only imagine. When the Soviet Union fell of its own weight and ineptitued and lie stacked upon lie socialist intellectual all over the world were surprised and could not believe that life in Soviet Russia could've been so dismal and dark. FDR called Stalin Uncle Joe as a diminutive slang. American intellectuals usually move to the left hoping for a cure to the vanaliies and inequities of the modern world; but communism betrays them over and over again. We keep hoping that man may find a system of goverment just and with a beating heart, noble and true; but it doesn't exist, not yet anyway.
Your grandparents must have thought the future belonged to the socialists. All over this country's universities people see George W and see evil becausse they need to have signs to steer by even if they are dark: something to personify waht we don't want to be. Life, however is not that simple.
my friends, and for that matter, the general American public think there is free and wonderful education and health care in Cuba, a socialist paradise. Nothing could be further from the truth. Go to therealcuba.com and see the aparty and the truth!.
Yet the idelogues like your grandparents will refuse to see the truth at all cost, even plain common sense. I think they saw themselvs as revolutionaries. Fidel believes that nobody in Cuba has ever been imprisone unjuslty. But guess what. He is abominably wrong.
Ivy, I am srry for telling you this; but I am a victim to. I am 64 years old and a damged man. Waht has happened to Cuba is a living nightmare. It has ruined my life.

Cubaandharma I think you mean well but you're a little naive about Ivy, her dad and her grandparents. They all know or knew how evil Communism was. In the course of debating four years Ivy and her dad had to know how horrible Communist Cuba is, just as the Rosenbergs had to know how murderous Stalin was. They simply don't care. Ivy and her dad and family traveled to Cuba to support Castro. When they hear about an artist or poet being tortured or executed there they think "good, another enemy of the people had been eliminated." In this day and age with all the information out there and all the victims' testimony, being pro-Communist is no more morally defensible than being pro-Nazi. The Communists murdered more people than Hitler. Ivy and her dad try to come across as rebels but in reality they're no better than neo Nazi skinheads. They knowingly support evil and oppression.
