Weak Story?

I enjoyed the game and I liked how the battle system was more MMORPG than the old RPG where you randomly run into stuff but..

I was disappointed by the story line, I felt what it lacked was a really good enemy, the last boss, was a snake but wasn't very evil, even the guy who was talking to him and cid didn't seam all that evil.

Just compared to story lines in the past I think this was one of the weakest story lines so far, which is rather disappointing because FF are the only console games I still play, and I play them for the storyline. Now I didn't say I didn't enjoy the game, I did and even chuckled a few times but I expect more from square soft when it comes to FF.

Actually I think it's the most thought-out plot. The problem is that it's about warring nations and political decisions and while playing, it seems that all you're doing is traipsing the land while most things take place behind the scenes. But your actions are key events that set others in motion. The whole picture is too big and abstract to really see that.

In essence, stopping a dictator from conquering the world isn't that different from stopping a madman/woman from destroying the world, as is basically the case for games 7 through 9.

Only 10 is different in that the world itself never really is in danger: it's just about breaking the cycle of Sin and the summoners, but it's made double important by the love story.

In 12, the world isn't in danger either, there's no real love story, and a lot is left to the imagination what would happen if Vayne Solidor is victorious. It's more about honor, birthrights, freedom from oppression etc. I think those are things people who can actually afford to play this game aren't necessarily familiar with, thus might not recognize their importance and value.

Also, personally, the dialogue in this game is so close to Shakespearean I can hardly understand what those characters are going on about, so I think a lot is blamed on how the message is delivered.

"There's a difference between simply being, and knowing you are."

I probably would've enjoyed the game more if I understood what they were saying! The "shakespearean" dialogue was hard for me to understand. I beat the game and didn't even know what the whole storyline was..I was too confused. I felt so unsatisfied when I beat the boss. I actually didn't even know it was the boss until the ending video started playing!

It was pretty much star wars.

The trouble with this game's story is...

It doesn't have one. There is more to a plot than a sequence of events. There has to be an integrating theme, and the characters need a purpose. The agendas of the villains were mystifying. Why does Venat want to restore "man's place in history"? Why does Vayne want that? What the heck was "the undying"--some Venat/Vayne hybrid? I was expecting questions to be answered at the end of the game, but the story was drivel.

A lot of plot points get discussed, answered and tied up with sidequest play. But the story itself without any of the sidequests is too short. Lack of character development for both the protagonists and the antagonists cripple the story's potential. The main story is really over before you know it.

I won't go so far as to say it was a terrible game, but it wasn't a good FF. You're right, you just don't connect to any of the characters. If you have 150-200 hours to spare, then you can probably get you money's worth, but it really shouldn't take that to get a good FF.

Fantastic game; garbage storyline.I just couldn't get into the story at all really. I know the storylines to 7 and 8, but couldn't for the life of me tell you what was happening in 9 or 12 (those four being the onlyFF games I played)When the gameplay is as good as it is in this case you can forgive the poor story though. This game is so good that I got a loan of my mate's PS2 to play it (mine stopped working some time ago) and the only reason I stopped playing it was that a few months ago a little thing called Modern Warfare 2 walked into my life, otherwise I might still be playing it!

Vayne killed his own father so he could rule foreign nations with an iron fist. All Archadians were also racist, as non human species were kept out of their kingdom. He's pretty evil.

It's the first mature story told since 7 and 8. You have to consider also, Vaan is not necessarily the "hero" of the game. It's about the party as a whole. It's much less a personal story than the story of kingdoms clashing.

You can have good character development without sacrificing the broader conflict. I love how broad the world is and that it played like an MMO was a nice experiment. That said, you could replace almost all of our protagonists and it wouldn't make a difference. That's how much we care about their well-being, very little.

It has the best gameplay, I've enjoyed in a Final Fantasy title. But I had no idea what was going on story wise.
