whats wrong with pearl jam???

pearljam are one of the greatest rock bands ever... i like white stripes too (but fail to see how anton had anything to do with their success) but pearl jam are amazing...

Agree on both counts.

Pearl Jam could never be accused of selling out. They removed themselves from the music industry machine early on, stopped making videos way before MTV stopped showing them, never used drum machines or synths, and have toured their butts off. Just 2 guitars, bass, drum and vocal. They've done things the old fashioned way.

And yes Anton trying to take credit for The White Stripes???!!! - nice try Anton. Sorry, ain't buying that baloney. The White Stripes have NOTHING to do with BJM.

agree with you on all points except "Just 2 guitars, bass, drum and vocal", they have been touring with piano/keyboard/organ player Boom Gaspar in recent years, and he has appeared on some of their albums from starting with riot act. But i know what your saying im just being pedantic.

Anton was essentially making the same kind of music Jack White eventually did (though White is a little more blues-leaning), that kind of 60s garage with crisper, more modern production. I think he's getting ahead of himself by calling The White Stripes and such imitators, but the BJM and the Dandies were essentially doing the New York 2001-2004 "garage revival" nearly a decade before it actually happened. With the kind of mindset already established throughout the movie, I wouldn't put it past the guy to whinge a little after watching the aesthetic he and others pioneered make so much money and gain so much prominence after they worked hard.

Pearl Jam are more respected among serious music fans today than when they first came out. Back in 1991-92, many people regarded them as the cheesy commercial mainstream end of the grunge/alternative movement, as their music was far more slick and less hard-edged than other bands coming out at the time like Mudhoney or Tad. Then they made a very admirable transition away from being corporate rock shills a few years later.

As for Anton and BJM, they began playing right around the time Pearl Jam first got big. So he probably still thinks of them as being the corporate face of grunge, as opposed to the serious artists they became after they first appeared.

Pearl Jam is a good band but I can see why Anton took issue with them. They're about as alternative as Aerosmith. A lot of indie and alt-rock purists looked down on Pearl Jam for being grunge imposters. Even Kurt Cobain said that they sucked (but later recanted his statement because he became friends with Eddie Vedder).

Just get me home, I'll do the rest.

^ that.

also, having been a huge fan once, i gotta admit, a lot of their music is pretty bland in hindsight.

We learned more from a three minute record than we ever learned in school
