Brilliant film, but one question remains unanswered. What actually happened to Jay's baby -- is the whole "baby story" her fantasy, or is the "pillow trick" an attempt to recapture what (and who) she really lost?
Regardless, I'm freakin' haunted by this film -- can't get it out of my mind. And the music... amazing.
Apparently, the baby had been kidnapped and /or killed.
How much was fantasy or dream is not clear. Jay and everyone else are seemingly dead and in an endless loop of repeating that evening.
Maybe Jaye killed her baby and got the death penalty for it. And, the whole movie is her in hell. Maybe, in this movie, hell is jsut like life. In hell, she still remembers losing her baby but does not remember killing it so she tries to commit suicide. Rick walks in and sees her and saves her. We already know why Rick is in hell (he killed Hilga). They get married but don't really love each other. In hell, nothing is right. Nothing ends happily. The cop is in hell. The war veteran at the motel in hell. Maybe "dad" is supposed to be Satan.
Or... maybe you could go all easy and say she is dreaming this whole thing and wakes up right after he slams the door in her face before the credits. Maybe she wakes up and sees her baby in a crib next to her... sound asleep. That would be too happy of an ending, though lol. Yet I like it.

The entire movie was her penance for killing her boyfriend (or husband whichever he was).
