Execellent Documentary

I saw a screening of this film at the Los Angeles Film Festival and it is excellent. It tells the true story of Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm's bid for the presidency of the United States in 1972. She was the first black person as well as the first woman to mount a serious campaign for the nation's top political office.

Carol Moseley-Braun could have learned much from seeing this documentary about how to run a presidential campaign. Without giving away too much, Chisholm actually fared better in her 1972 bid than Moseley-Braun did in her 2004 campaign for the same job. All the more impressive is that Chisholm faced significantly larger obstacles in her campaign than did Moseley-Braun.

CHISHOLM '72: UNBOUGHT & UNBOSSED should be required viewing for anybody interested in mounting a grassroots political campaign. It's also an excellent film about the determination of one person to succeed without caving into special interests.
