I am sorry to hear the story of the family you mentioned. It does seem they need to be reassured someone's smiling on them.
I was researching the show for the same reason only to find production ended in 2012. The producers cited the recession as the cause. Unfortunately that makes sense. People who can barely make ends meet & companies struggling to make payroll cannot give away their time and products. Like you I hope someone finds a way to reboot this show using perhaps less extravagant homes. Making it more affordable for production cost and homeowners alike. I personally wanted to nominate my parents who are very known in their community through helping so many in need & volunteering. They lost their home to a fire last month with my dad literally getting out with just his undies and rover. Everything else is gone, everything. (Propane & oxygen tanks exploded once the fire reached them leaving a fire beyond the ability of local firefighters.) Though they have insurance they've been professionally advised that the insurance money for home & contents will cover only the rebuilding of a home due to the high cost of construction. My parents do not want or need an extravagant home, just handicap accessible & comfy. Apparently wanting such an "oddity" is very expensive. What does one do at their age, losing a lifetime of belongings and needing a handicapped home on a fixed income? No one can ever be made whole after a complete loss disaster but this show could've eased their pain. (Bonus, my mom loved the show & thought Ty was a cutie.) Their community responded in such a massive way that I literally slept & spent my days at their church for the first 4 days in order to take in donations and well wishes while manning the phone as people were eager to hear they were okay. It was touching & a tribute to their own giving. I just knew this show would help them heal from this hellish incident. Now we move forward in a different direction.
Please, anyone who reads this I beg you to photograph not just the interior of your home but every closet, drawer, cabinet, attic and contents of jewelry box as well. If you ever face a total loss trying to list every object as required is both emotionally and mentally exhausting at
an already stressful time. And please have fire extinguishers in the home and patio. I know I will never hear of a home fire in my city again without trying to aid the family some how after this experience.
I think our country needs shows like this not just hurting, in need families. It didn't just help you empathize with the family & cheer them on. It gave communities an opportunity to pull together, making a difference one hand at a time and viewers the idea of helping in their own communities in perhaps smaller ways. It showed a better way of living through giving, learning, thankfulness, generosity and community power than watching all the other reality shows combined. I do hope even a few specials can be produced very soon & carry on for many more years.
