This really is one of the best television series I've seen. John Hurt is wonderful in the title role, Jenny Agutter fantastic as his wife and the whole panopoly of supporting players really have their Tory counterparts down to a t.

I agree. Though I live in Denver in the USA, my friend sends me tapes all the time of great shows from the U.K. (which is how I knew about Coupling and The Office before other people here did). He just sent me the full 3-hour series on VHS and I loved it. Why doesn't America make a mini-series as good as this? Here it's usually either a disaster action series or some lame sappy romance. We never get intelligent or discursive writing from people with the talent of an Alan Clark or Alan Bennett. John Hurt is absolutely amazing and mesmerizing in this show. I hope he was recognized for it over there because it's quite brilliant.
