Horhay = Jorge?

The only thing that I didn't get in this movie is why was Kevin Bacon's character called Horhay throughout the entire movie, but at the end called Jorge?

reply

I hope you were just spelling that out for the board? Jorge is George in Spanish and he was a fraud, trying to appear European but he was a dumb hick American.

reply

Yes, I know he was a fraud and that Jorge is George in Spanish, but that's what I'm talking about, he was supposed to be Austrian, not Spanish, so was it a flaw in the script or the character's own mistake.

Austrian and Spanish are not similar, so I just didn't get the whole name thing. He could be Austrian and called Jorge (pronounced George) but why would he have people pronouncing it Horhay?

reply

Just to set the record straight.

In Austrian, George is usually pronounced "Ghee-org"

But yes, they made a mistake as well.

People do move around in Europe, you know. Names don't always indicate someone's origin. Anyway, he was hick and didn't know the difference.

reply

It's about black screenwriters not knowing anything about European-Americans AKA white people and trying to portray them in their stories anyway.

Unlike black people, white people know they are not all the same; they are from different ethnic backgrounds, Scots-Irish, Italian, Austrian, etc.

No matter how dumb Kevin Beacon's character was or was not, he knew the difference between faking Spanish and faking German/Austrian. White people know this, trust me.

Just goes to show the old adage "write what you know" has a lot of truth where screenwriting is concerned. Or at the very least, the screenwriter should have done her homework, get to know some EAs, etc.

reply

I think it was part of the joke about him. Like he was saying it like that to appear more exotic or something. It was part of his affectation.

reply

and actually, Horhay is how you pronounce Jorge. Any first-year Spanish student knows that. As somebody else mentioned, "George" was just a southern hick who didn't know how to act truly European. And the accent that Kevin adopted for the role is more Italian/Greek than Spanish or Austrian.

Wolverine: Hey hey, it's me.
Cyclops: Prove it.
Wolverine: You're a dick.
Cyclops: Ok.

reply

Because he's a Whore hey!

reply

It's kinda like how they pronounce "Jesus" as "HeyZeus" in Mexican/South America.

That's how I looked at they pronounced Jorge.

reply

Omg, please don't tell me you just said in Mexican.
Spanish is the language people and they pronounce J's with a H...

reply

Or kind of like how North Americans pronounce the Messiah's name as 'Gee-zus'!

reply

You're joking, right? "Horhay" is how you phonetically ptonounce "Jorge". Sheesh... 😒
