Unbelievable!

One of the things I found out about this wonderful movie is that the budget was only $2.7 million dollars (U.S). I really thought that it cost a lot more than that, the visuals were mindblowing in their depth and beauty. It just goes to show you that a lot of love and talent goes a long way in film making, a lesson that is being lost with sucessive Hollywood productions. I don't really like to talk about budgets and box office revenues because I feel that they skew the focus away from film as an art to film as pure commerce, but this is quite an achievement. I got this information from a very insightful interview with the director Satoshi Kon. The interview is here, enjoy;

gomenasai! i didnt really read, or took in everything you wrote after you pointed out how much budget the film took to make.

its an amazing film. and its staggering now, even more, when, to think, it was made with that kind of money.

In light of Satoshi Kon's death I was just browsing this board. When I found out he died I am not ashamed to say that I had tears in my eyes. His film had so much style and beauty. They really pushed the limits of what animation could do. An anime producer at Madhouse animation lamented that with Kon's death the problem was not that anime would never be the same, rather that anime would always be the same. As good as some anime has been in the past and is now, I can't help feeling that anime itself is in decline. With budgets falling and production values slipping and very few auteurs like Kon around it feels like the end days for anime. So sad...
