Ice skating for the handicapped?!??!

I was watching it just last night and I caught something I never noticed before----One of the policemen selling the calendar mentions the sentence "Ice skating for the handicapped."

Why do I get the feeling, that's not a good idea?

Well, I guess to allude to that they made Luther take a hose, freeze out his neighbor's cat as well as his own driveway and injure some non-disabled people--even Nora ended up taking a slide on it!

She mentioned he turned their driveway into an ice rink
Could have put a caroler in the hospital
Someone could have broken a neck or a leg

And all he said was:

"That's a bad thing?"

reply

Why not? I think it's a great idea!

I've gone whitewater rafting with more people with disabilities than I can count offhand, and the same organization that sponsored it routinely takes people snowshoeing, canoeing, cross-country skiing, and rock climbing, regardless of their individual challenges.

If anyone wants to go ice-skating, there's no reason in the world they couldn't be accommodated, and I'd be the first to contribute.

I am not against people with disabilities participating in sports. In high school I used to volunteer in special olympics and adaptive P.E<phys ed for the physically disabled [pun intended, they had such a great sense of humor about that'] and we did stuff that they were able to handle.

I may have been absent on extreme sports day, but somehow, I doubt it. Anywho, you tell me how ice skating with physically disabled, para and quadriplegic people would work--how would it be handled? What would it look like? What if someone gets hurt===how would they have handled that as well?

How do people confined to wheelchairs ice skate?

reply

I don't skate myself, so I couldn't give you specifics, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility out-of-hand. Granted, some disabilities might be easier to accommodate than others.

I'm reading the book which is very similar to the movie. They mention ice skating but it says for the less fortunate. Here is the line from the book -

The Police Benevolent Association was once again working at full throttle to do all sorts of wonderful things for the community. Toys for Tos. Christmas baskets for the less fortunate. Visits by Santa. Ice Skating Adventures. Trips to the zoo.

They do make adaptive chairs with skate blades on them.
