Moral of the story: its selfish to skip Xmas?

Dont get my wrong, i actually love this movie, its so ridiculous that its funny.

But was that really the moral of the story? It was so stupid when all the neighbors were yelling that Tim was selfish and didnt deserve help. When they were the ones that harassed and bullied them. A better ending would have been if they owned up to their mistakes, and the couple leaves on the cruise right after the party was over.

I dont get why its selfish for Tim to want to do something for himself for once, it seems like every year they donate a lot of time and money to their community.
