A rather quiet, contemplative flim. Do you know of others like it??

Watched it today. Made for nice escapist movie viewing! I was wondering what other movies out there are like this: sort of quiet, contemplative, dream-like... I liked how Schultze was floating on the waterways on that hi-jacked boat. Seemed very dreamy.

Anyway, list other movies in this same vein if you know of any.

"The man without a Past" has the same slowliness, lack of much dialog, humor that is even dryer, and positive feeling. Also about everyday people.

If you like German slow realistic movies, you might check out movies from Fassbinder, although these are very 'heavy', unhappy movies w/o humor. But wity very much impact.

For a lighter movie, watch the straight story. Not so much humoristic, but nice & slow, and with beautiful sceneries.

Jim Jarmusch's films maybe. And yes "Mies vailla menneisyyttä" was quite good for a finnish film.

First time I took this in, I was reminded of the pacing in "Songs from the Second Floor" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120263

Love them both! Might make for a fun double feature on movie night?

Answering my own post here, but.... two recent movies reminded me of "Schultze Gets The Blues:"

"Uzak" http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0346094/

and "Tony Takitani" http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0420260/

Both are very slow-paced, quiet and dreamlike movies. Very much in the same vein as "Schultze Gets The Blues."

I think that 'The Straight Story' directed by David Lynch (for Disney Studios believe it or not) has a lot of similar qualities with 'Schultze'. It too is a rather quiet, slowly paced, contemplative film that shares the same sort of 'end of life' dynamics that inspire a journey of a lifetime. Both have very beautiful scenery to add to the contemplative feeling of the film as well.

Richard Farnsworth came out of retirement to do this film and it was his final role. It was worthy of an Oscar nom as well.

I wish I was a headlight on a northbound train. I'd shine my light through the cool Colorado rain.

I was thinking of the "Straight Story" as well, but couldn't remember the name. Another quiet and dear film.

Passion Fish is pretty laid back, and like this film also takes place in Louisiana, not quite as slow but pretty laid back.

I'm rather late to this thread, but I'd suggest other "road trip" films (although Schultze's road was a waterway) such as Nebraska with Bruce Dern.

You know what? I'm going to add The Motorcycle Diaries to this list.

Try "Ultranova" by Bouli Lanners. It irritated me as mush as Schultze, so there are chacnes you might enjoy (I'm not being sarky, by the way).

Once again answering my own post here (and thanks to others who have responded), but, I recently saw and enjoyed "Ruby in Paradise," which, though maybe not quite as quiet and contemplative as SGTB, is nevertheless intriguing viewing because it had that same "immerse the viewer in somebody else's personal story" kind of quality that SGTB has. So, let me unequivocally add "Ruby in Paradise" to the list.

Hello Eric,

interesting thread because I'm currently assembling a list of exactly the same kind of movies for exactly the same reasons :

is nevertheless intriguing viewing because it had that same "immerse the viewer in somebody else's personal story" kind of quality that SGTB has.
So here's my list so far, in no particular oder, containing only films I've seen and recommend:

The Band's Visit http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1032856/, from Israel.
Tuya's Marriage http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0949564/, set in Mongolia, and talking of Chinese films, you may also like the early films by Zhang Yimou from before he went all commercial:
The Road Home http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0235060/ and
Not One Less http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0209189/, perhaps also
To Live http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110081/.
Let's change continent again:
Kitchen Stories http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0323872/ set in Norway;
Kukushka http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0308476/, a Russian film
101 Reykjavík http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0237993/, from Iceland;
Kikujiro http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0199683/ from Japan (I posted a few random screen caps from the film on its board)
It may be a bit of a stretch, but a small one, your "conditions" I quoted above are also matched by early Jim Jarmusch films, for instance this one:
Stranger than Paradise http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088184/
and by another small stretch there's also this wonderful documentary about a family and a particular event in their life you might like:
The Story of the Weeping Camel, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0373861/, although a German film, it's by a Mongolian director and set in her home country Mongolia.
Not exactly slow and dreamlike, but immersing yourself in another person's life for sure, and an excellent film altogether is also
Salaam, Bombay! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096028/ from India, not very quiet exactly, but very engaging.
Still Life http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0859765/, again a Chinese film, beautiful, melancholy and very engaging, that will immerse you in the lives of people who have to leave their cities because of the Three Gorges Dam being built (I posted some screen caps on the board of the film).

Most of these films have a subtle humor, or rather, scintillate between funny and melancholy, except for "To Live" and the three last ones which are more serious in tone.

The Man without a Past from Finland is on my list, too, and was already mentioned by someone else on this thread.

Thanks for that list, Rosabel. I can see you put a lot of work into your list, with active links and everything. I really appreciate it!

From your list, I've seen:
The Road Home
To Live
Salaam Bombay
The Story of the Weeping Camel

All were excellent, and worthy of being including on this list. Thanks again.

Seeing that I was on the right track with my previous recommendations, here are two more for the list:

I've heard the Mermaids singing http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093239/, very charming film from Canada;
Keiner liebt mich/Nobody loves me http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110251/ from one of my favorite German directors.

Let me add "Christmas in August" to the list. It's a Korean film very much in the same vein as "Shultze Gets the Blues" -- at least as far as being quiet and contemplative.
