Did he or did he not?
As my boyfriend and me watched to movie today, we somehow don't agree on wether or not he stole the boat.
Does anyone know?

I was talking to someone else who saw the movie and the same question came up.
We agreed, it seems too out of character for Schultze to steal anything. He's too rule-bound and conservative in his behavior. His fearfulness in his unfamiliar surroundings makes it seem unlikely that he would do anything that risky.
too or to?
shareI think he did steal the boat- it seemed like he was having a quiet build up of frustration with the music festival in Texas. He realized that these Americans didn't want to hear zydeco/cajun music any more than most of the people back home did... It seems like he just "ran away", like running away to the circus. The music was calling him into Louisiana, and off he went.
It did seem a bit out of character, but that was the point of the film to me... A man finally breaking out of his old character, and letting his new-found obsession with this wild music pull him into a new life.
i thought that it was just some abandoned boat he came across. it wasnt working and didnt have very much gas so it seems like it was just sitting there when he found it. also, if he had stolen it i think the sheriff guy would have known and said something.
shareThe poster pretttymuch has got it right, Schultze found the boat. I just re-watched the film with the audio commentary of the director Michael Schorr who said that the America part of the film had to be shortened and the scene with Schultze finding the boat and repairing it was shot, but deleted, because he thought it more important to show him going on the boat trip than to show the preparatory procedures.
The director also mentions a hurricane that happened in real life and delayed the shooting of the film, so I guess the idea was that Schultze's boat was one of those random 'hurricane victims' stranded somewhere.
