WORST film EVER!

This is by far, the worst film I've ever seen.
No script. Terrible acting. Camera never moves and endless shots where nothing happens. Is this film a joke?
It will bore you to death!

Ummm can u say Puma Man. Watch that and tell me there is a movie worse than that.

Way too slow by far. I had it on fast forward most of the time. Didn't miss a thing either.

I really thought it was foolhardy for a foreign person to putt around the bayou in a motor boat with no known places to get fuel. No American would do it. Maybe he just didn't know any better.

He should have been held up at gunpoint at least once. Now that would be realistic!

reply

Troll!!!!!!!!!

And Americans do putt around in tiny boats. I know of a few.

reply

Do they know where they are going to gas up?

reply

We had no idea where the gas was located. We eventually found it, but we didn't use a map or anything.

Lol, that's because all Americans are busy crawling up and down skyscrapers in Spiderman outfits? :)

Well, yours is about the most original objection against the film I've ever heard - it's not realistic enough for you? I can assure you: 99,99999999999 % of Germans wouldn't putt around the bayou in a motor boat either. But that's exactly why this film was made, if this makes any sense to you - it's about a simple guy with a dream who, unlike most of the other simple guys all over the world, puts his dream into practice. Shouldn't be too hard to understand, no?

If you can't get enough yelling, or fist-fighting, or things blowing up, or people screaming "nooooooo" as they are separated from their loved ones (preferably in some horrible, bloody manner), or objects flying past the camera, or the hero killing everyone in sight (preferably in some horrible, bloody manner) and then saying something extremely appropriate for such an occasion, like "Yippee-ki-yay, MFer", or if you like to see every film from the viewpoint of a victim, and maybe pick up a few tips on how to beat those bad guys, then this movie is not for you.

However, if you want to see an honest movie about some believable characters, and have the movie *show* you their lives, rather than have everything spelled out in the dialogue, then watch this movie. The terminator isn't coming to get you, nor the East Germans, nor the Russians, nor the aliens, nor the terrorists (well maybe the terrorists). But even if they were coming, why not take a look at what an old German miner is doing in his retirement and the people he meets and the enjoyment that he sucks out of life before you have to go back to fighting those bad guys.

Well said, Trappeur.

Thank you for that comment, Trappeur :-)

I have shown this film to low ability high school kids. They would never have watched it on their own, but when it was over they told me it was one of the most moving films they had ever seen. Several said they hope that someday they will have an adventure like Schultze has. Yes, it is slow moving. Yes, it is more visual than audible. Yes, it is almost unbelievable, but those are all reasons why it is so wonderful. Without doubt, this is one of my favorite movies of all time.

reply

oh well your taste keeps those studio moguls churning out the typical action flick where chase scenes keep stuntmen employed and hacks writing implausible stories to the profit of studio execs looking for points and minimal risks.

Next time you go see a movie or rent it, read up on what's it about... better yet go to IMDB.COM and search for action flics but don't shoot down a movie by mixing up genres!

Schultze gets the Blues, is a mood piece where you don't really NEED a plot but rather where you get to see a story. As often is the case in a "slow" moving story, books are often s better medium to convey the lives of our protagonist essentially gone on a road trip.

As my personal opinion of this movie, I was expecting a newer version of Bagdad Cafe where the juxtaposition of cultures was conducive to funny situations. Unfortunately, short of the hot tub, there wasn't anything particularly interesting besides some boating scenes in the bayous. There are no interesting dialogues or exchanges so I replayed the film listening to Zydeco music and had the sub-titles running and I made a very very long music video of the American scenes...

Looking forward to returning to New Orleans, spend some tourists dollars and help out by bringing laughter and a joie de vivre... just like Schultze!

It's too bad that you didn't get the movie. This is one of better movies that I have seen last a few years. Reminds me of Triplettes de Belleville.

I have noticed that a lot of younger crowds don't find these slow pacing movies interesting. I just found all the imagery beautifully shot and composed. I gave 8 out of 10. This is a good, good movie!

My life isn't any better than yours.

Yeah. these days teenagers bring their cell phones and talk to each other around the theatre. You can hear them whining that someone has made them come and they would rather be at the mall. Or stuff like "Dude did you see that" or "WHO'S THAT SITTING IN FRONT OF YOU?"

I wished to God I had bought a cell phone jammer while visiting London last year.

They have the attention span of gnats and only stop talking if there is a big slow motion explosion that the hero can outrun.

reply

Hey.

I take offense to that. I am fifteen years old and Schultze Gets the Blues is one of my favorite films. People don't have bad taste in movies because they are teenagers, but simply because they have bad taste in movies. There are plenty of adults who love films like Mission Impossible 3 and hate films like Schultze Gets the Blues, so don't pin down bad taste in films to one age group.
Thanks.

I have to agree with Obverse.
I saw this movie when I was seventee and I loved it.

I HATE action films. I prefer movies like Schultze, and the most "action-packed" film I actually like is Jaws- but that's a classic, it doesn't really count.

So yeah, age has nothing to do with it, stop stereotyping.

reply

honestly, and i did love this movie when i was fourteen, age kinda does have something to do with it. while its not true that EVERY teen wouldnt like this kind of movie, it is true that MOST teens wouldnt like this kind of movie. thus why i had to drag my unflaggingly loyal best friend, who would put up with it, to the movies that i knew i would be the only one who liked them so as not to go alone.

and thus we come upon one of the most troubling arguments in nearly all areas, the general truth versus the exception. its present in many many places, youll find.

the solution to it, of course, is never to assume anything. if someone asks you what you think would be a good movie for a fourteen year old, for example, you shouldnt assume that the fourteen year old has the same taste as most fourteen year olds just because most fourteen year olds have that taste, and instead you should ask what kind of taste in movies the fourteen year old has.

It's not just the slowness. "Soy Cuba" is slow but a masterpiece (longer, too). "Schultze" is just pretty clumsily directed. I got the feeling everyone was amateur on this, with the exception of the director of photography. Absolutely nothing was developed in the story. I felt absolutely nothing for the character by the end. If his dream was to discover Cajun music, why does he lose his accordion at some stage in the proceedings? If he was trying to discover the people, how come his only words are to repeat his name and "petroleum" repeatedly?

I really got the impression this could be a cute short film. But 1 hour 50? Yegads!

The comments about Hollywood blockbusters are silly. Compare like with like: "Bagdad Cafe" is a minor classic. "Schultze" is a feeble first film wrapped in cute photography.

I'm sorry you didn't understand it. Obviously there's a way movies like this "ought" to go - Schultze "should" have had one uncomfortable performance about a quarter of the way through the movie, then he "should" have been in Louisiana within 45 minutes and he "should" have rounded off the movie on stage with his zydeko heroes playing to a rapturous audience. This is simply not that kind of movie, thank God.

You've missed the beauty of the acting. It's an economy of script, not a lack of it. There's so much emotion in this movie, sadness, laughter, the lot, but I can see why it might seem boring if you expected something else. The movie has to be paced a certain way to explain Schultze's life and his hometown.

reply

I can see how this movie would bore the mainstream. If you're in sinc' with all the mindless garbage Hollywood is constantly putting out, "Schultze gets the Blues" is not for you. We are most certainly not discussing an Action Movie here, however if you expected one after reading the Box Cover you can only put the Blame on yourself. This is a small, independent foreign film, with a lot of heart, great character studies, very good acting and a dry, subtle humor that will delight an audience that came to see a film. If you want to be bombarded with the usual Hollywood Massproduction perhaps you should be watching something like "The Longest Yard". Maybe that would be just a little bit more predictable.

After reading all the responses to this post I'm a bit offended by the implication that if you don't like this movie then you're obviously a mainstream studio whore who only appreciates action movies and other typical Hollywood schlock. Both my husband and I were extremely disappointed in this film for many reasons but I hardly think that makes us intellectual lightweights or unappreciative of good film making. It was an incredibly slow movie but more importantly, the film makers didn't do a good job of showing Schultze's journey from polka to blues except for having him play one song over and over again. Music can be inspiring and life changing but I didn't get any of that from this film. I generally like movies where the film makers don't show or tell the audience every little nuance but this movie showed nothing. I don't think that makes me narrow minded of means that I didn't "get" the movie. I just didn't like it. However, we both wondered if there was too much lost in the translation because it was obvious every line wasn't subtitled. I'd suggest my Mom watch it because she speaks German but I'm not sure I want to subject her to this film.

Agreed. I haven't seen this particular movie yet, but this viewpoint applies to any movie that does something remotely outside of Hollywood's box. Since when were non-mainstream films above criticism? Why is it, that just because a movie isn't some old hat with car chases, explosions, and one-liners peppered over a predictable "good guy vs. bad guy" plotline mean it's automatically good? Not that I'm defending the original poster, whose "critiques" come across as vague and hyperbolic (I'll confirm this once I actually see the film), but these knee jerk "you just get off on shallow Hollywood action flicks LOL" responses are simply tiresome, and are of no use to anyone but the people who make them, and merely as exercises in patting themselves on the back for being so much more "sophisticated" and "open minded" than the mindless masses (i.e. anyone who does not share their unabashed love for a movie that wasn't financed by Hollywood), at that.

Rant over.
