I watched this with my family.

I tried to like it as im interested in the Maori & history but just couldnt. Sorry.

I agree with the first poster.

After half an hour. My brother fell asleep. I did a crossword and my Dad gave up and read a book. My mum thought it was alright though. I think it was the relentless narration, repeated Celtic music, and lingering slow-motion shots that put me off.

Oh and i really got annoyed with the accents. I know some were genuine but Kiefers especially just seemed so unnatural. Maybe thats just as i know hes american though.

Sutherland was actually born in London, and has British and Canadian passports (or, more accurately, a British Right of Abode) but never mind.

I was a bit disappointed by the film. I like the four leads, especially Samantha Morton, the scenery and the camera work were astonishing, but the script was leaden and plodding and I can see why people were bored by it.

The film was set during the time of the New Zealand Land Wars, which were crucial to the Maori people, yet none of this was really explored. If you knew nothing about Kiwi history I'm sure you could believe that the film was set in the time of an initial invasion, which it wasn't.

All in all, an opportunity wasted, IMO.

My Maori friend agrees with you, as do I. I still kinda like it though, but it was a good opportunity wasted. One of the biggest problems (I think I read this in Wellington film archives) was that the director changed a few times and it is pretty much unfinished as they couldn't shoot some of the parts that ended up as scenery and narration because there was no director (among other things). So they used what they had. It has been almost 3 years since, so that might not be entirely correct in my memory, but I think that was the gist of it.

I agree with the narration and slow-motion comments.

It felt like most of the movie was narrated. Sometimes we can understand things even if you don't say them out loud. And you don't have to slow down things in order for us to understand. Life does not slow down, it goes by and if you don't catch things you lose them. These are what made it boring for me.

Apart from these I liked the story. I had no idea about this part of history, it was enlightening. And I loved the scenery and the music.

Anyway, I liked the movie but somehow it wasn't that successful. I don't know if it's because of direction or script or anything else. So I gave it a 6/10 .

i have to agree with hindkwt, this movie was really slow and boring. I couldn't even finish it. Not the best moments of kiefer sutherlands career.
