WHYYYYY did she do that to... [spoiler?]

why did she kill the baby bird!? i almost cried!

reply

To take it out of its misery. Obviously it was hurt too much, it wouldn't recover from it. She buried it by herself to keep her son away from death...

reply

Because it was suffering, and was going to die anyway. She didn't want to expose her son to the pain of death. Didn't you listen to her narration during that scene?

"Oooo, we gonna need more wax!"

reply

I always figured she killed it because she wanted it to be just her and her son and she didnt want to have the bird around

Yup. She just wanted it to be her and her son. She didn't want him to have affection for a bird. She felt it should just be between the two of them. Man if you think she did it to "take it out of it's misery" then you are a superficial viewer.

reply

The bird was on it's way to recovery - and she killed it to shelter her son away from one more thing that he loved.

reply

she killed the bird for both reasons. yes, she didn't want to share her son and she wanted to continue living in the closed off world she's created. and yes, the bird was hurt and going to die, and she did put it out of its misery. someone posted she didn't seem upset and actually seemed thrilled by the kill - that is complete nonsense. if breathing heavily and holding back tears does not convey distress over killing an animal, then i don't know what this viewer wanted from miss sedgwick. she's not a monster, she's a sad, damaged person. people on this board shouldn't call others "superficial" because they choose not to completely demonize the mother and try to take more than one reading from this movie. you're superficial for just taking the "evil mother" route.

I think she killed it because it was too young to survive on its own. She felt the best thing to do was to put it out of its misery. Also, it foreshadowed what she did to herself, and tried to do to her son, later on. If life is filled with pain or suffering that's too much to bear, then she felt that dying was the only way out. She felt she was responsible for bringing her son into the world and she needed to take him with her to a gentler, more peaceful place when she left it. ( I know, I know, there's no guarantees that that's how it'll be, but that's probably how she was thinking, she was depressed & unbalanced, and she didn't see any other way out). I imagine that deep down in our darkest innermost selves a lot of parents have uncertainties if they did the right thing by bringing a child into the world. They start out full of joy & hope, but then the struggles & realities of life set in. Most parents work through it, but some just don't have the strength. I think the movie had a really nice ending, her son seems to have understood his mother's problems. "Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry, so just look at them and sigh, and know they love you".

Were you at all disturbed by what she did to the HUMAN?

reply

I know, right? You kill a human then nobody gives a crap unless they know the person. But if you kill an animal then they are ready to grab the rope.
