There are actually "banks" for breast milk now. It's pretty expensive, I think. Women who have trouble breastfeeding their children can buy breast milk from women who can still express (pump) it and are willing to do so. I'm not sure if the women who do the expressing get paid for it or do it for free. Adoptive parents often buy this milk, as well as others who have trouble for other reasons such as various forms of breast surgery (not necessarily a deterrent to breastfeeding) or other medical conditions. I think that if you have close friends you know are very healthy and who are breastfeeding their children you might not have a problem with them feeding your child with your permission. Also, if you had problems breastfeeding you might be willing to accept breast milk from a friend you trust (i.e. know their health habits) who can still express milk and is willing to provide it to you. Breast milk is extremely nutritious. Having had to supplement (e.g. both nursed and fed formula) my child I would consider this option if we had another child. But, I would not appreciate it if a stranger took it upon themselves to nurse my child without asking!!!!
