I like Kevin Bacon BUT Damn I didn't enjoy this movie!

maybe he'll do better next time.

You mean, maybe next time he'll do something that suits your tastes.

He did a GREAT job on this, but it's not a film everyone will appreicate.

I didn't like this movie either. I thought it was borderline insanity and I feared the kid would grow up a sicko and dissect frogs while they were alive.

Kyra did an awesome job playing a wackjob.

This movie made me feel uneasy. No mother in her right mind acts like that towards a child. She was well beyond possessive.

One day you might realize that there are really no limits to just how some people will act towards any creature under their control.

I didn't like this movie either, so tell me why I sat through it! I kept thinking maybe it would get better, or Paul's father would show up and claim him. Then I realized it was just a one night stand and Emily would never have tried to contact him anyway, since she wanted Paul all to herself. I had a hard time following the flashbacks. Weird movie.

The point wasn't about her being a sympathetic or unsympathetic character. The point is that people come in shades of gray. She was a product of her childhood, and had a great, magical view of the world, one that might be applauded by anyone who thinks the system destroys people. The hitch here was that she was unrelenting, and unrealistic about the world around her, her son's eventual development of his own personality and growth, and her own anti-social behavior and "use" of people. People who aren't "wack-jobs" do these things all the time, alas. The happy ending here is that it appears the son inherited her mother's magic without her damage. At least it seems that way.

truth b told this movie just wasnt well done....ppl keep mentioning shades of gray....well the movie never really gives any good reason 4 the mom 2 b so possessive...ppl say she had bad parents but the movie never shows them as being overly self-involved...just horny...n thats y the movie never really clicks...i tried to sympathise w/ the mom but the movie just misses its own point n so even the half happy ending seems forced...put in to make the movie seem deep when its really more like Mother Dearest

Jeb, I got the sense that she'd been molested. Obviously, her parents had little sexual boundaries and did not take care of her well. It would not be far-fetched to assume they were swingers and something happened to her at one of their parties. And I thought her relationship with Mrs. Harker might have gotten a little odd given that kiss. I also read the book so I can't remember how much of my opinion might have been formed by it.

I always liked the way a scraped knee looks on a girl. - Mrs. Harker

You said it 'no mother in her right mind'...sadly many parents are not in their right mind and act like this and much worse! :(
