Why did the officers go after Pepper?

Pepper pretended something was wrong with his bike, and when the officers "figured out what was wrong with it", the bike was "fixed" and Pepper rode off.

Why did those two officers proceed to follow him, along with three more cars? What did he do wrong? Were they still suspicious as to why he was in the Costco parking lot?

If you watch it again you may notice this however this is what I believe the reason to be.

Pepper said his bike was broken, the police try to help, Pepper thinks that Charlie is being to load and the police will catch on so he quickly gets on the bike and literally bumps one of the officers as he speeds off.

Not to mention that it was strange that his bike "broke down" in the middle of an empty parking lot then magically fixes itself as Pepper speeds away from the police. This would be a cause of alarm for most police officers, I would think anyways.

I also think that the reason so many cop cars follow Pepper is that they've now called for backup since he has refused to pull over, I would think this to be standard procedure.

One thing I thought was a dumb idea on Charlie, Miranda and Pepper's part was that Miranda and Charlie talked to Pepper instead of only receiving audio from Pepper. Not only would this have just been a good idea in general as a talking pocket is often suspicious but their failure to think of this idea caused the police to go back to Costco a lot sooner then they would probably have if Pepper was the only one allowed to speak through the "walkie-talkie" (What are they called?). I also though Pepper should have thrown the device into a bush or something or at least turned it off, though it's obvious none of them are really professional robbers and the movie is not based on a whole lot of realisim.

Did he bump the officer? I thought he stole his binder.

reply

he didnt steal the binder.. he just kinda peeled out and knocked into the officer. it was suspecious so they tailed him. he got the threat away from the real action going on in costco.

You people do realize it is a movie? For enjoyment purposes?

Doesn't mean that the plot shouldn't make sense....

He peeled away really quickly and in a reckless manner, and they called for backup because he wouldn't pull over.

They pulled him over because:

1) A black guy on a motorbike in the middle of the night, alone in a parking lot behind a large supermarket.

2) He is acting suspicious, glancing at door to closed supermarket.

3) He drives away (fast) without even saying thank you after the police helped him re-start his bike.

Police did the right thing.

Well I do agree with reason number one tha nmeisher mentioned. Being a "suspicious" black guy (who's not famous) in the middle of the night driving away from the police can get you killed in California. And true to California police form, they sent the whole horde after him instead of dispatching a few of them into the Costco to see what was really going on.

I just saw the film tonight. I'd like to add that the scene of the three (or four or whatever) police cars chasing a black guy relatively slowly down the highway seemed to be spoofing the OJ chase, at least that's how it struck my wife and me.

It's their job, of course. The store was the sight of an earlier incident to which police and fire units had to respond. A short time later, there is a man in the parking lot of that store acting suspiciously who rode off abruptly after colliding with an officer and stealing his ticket book.
